Research on personality and relationship outcomes has consistently shown that similarity in personality traits — particularly Agreeableness and Emotional Stability (low Neuroticism) — predicts greater relationship satisfaction. A large-scale meta-analysis by Malouff et al. (2010) found that both one's own personality traits and the similarity between partners' traits significantly predict relationship quality.
Agreeableness is weighted most heavily in our algorithm (1.5x) because it directly affects how partners handle conflict, show empathy, and cooperate in daily life. Neuroticism receives a 1.3x weight because emotional stability alignment determines how couples weather stress together.
However, compatibility is not destiny. Research also shows that relationship skills — communication, conflict resolution, emotional intelligence — are at least as important as personality match. Couples with lower personality compatibility can thrive with strong relationship skills, while highly compatible couples can struggle without them.
Big Five compatibility compares two people's scores on Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. For each trait, similarity is calculated as the inverse of the difference between scores. Agreeableness and Neuroticism are weighted more heavily because research shows they have the greatest impact on relationship satisfaction.
Research shows that similarity in personality traits, particularly Agreeableness and Emotional Stability (low Neuroticism), is associated with higher relationship satisfaction. However, complementary differences can also be beneficial. What matters most is how partners navigate their differences through communication and mutual respect.
Research consistently identifies Agreeableness and Neuroticism (Emotional Stability) as the two most important Big Five traits for relationship satisfaction. High Agreeableness in both partners predicts better conflict resolution, while alignment on Neuroticism helps partners understand each other's emotional needs and stress responses.
