What is The Riddler's IQ?
Edward Nygma is a criminal who sets riddles for the police and for Batman. In the comics he has solved problems that other villains could not, including working out Batman's identity in one storyline. Nygma's fixation on puzzles is also his weakness, because he cannot stop himself from announcing his plans. A brilliant puzzle-maker who is easy to catch, so he sits in the low 150s.

Scene-by-scene evidence
Puzzles that stump Batman
Strong evidenceSeries-wide
The Riddler's riddles and traps are designed to challenge the world's best detective, and in many stories they do. Creating a puzzle that works requires a good model of the solver. This is the clearest evidence for deduction and invention in his profile, even if the comics make the puzzles easy for the reader. Outwitting the world's best detective, even briefly, is a rare achievement among his peers.Learning Batman's identity
Moderate evidenceHush storyline (2002-2003)
In one well-known storyline, the Riddler works out who Batman is and uses the knowledge in a larger scheme. It is a strong demonstration of deduction from indirect evidence. The knowledge is later lost or ignored in continuity, so we count it as moderate. He reaches the conclusion by combining many small pieces of information, which is the kind of reasoning we look for. The continuity problems reduce its weight, but the underlying display of deduction is real. The Box
Moderate evidenceBatman Forever (1995)
In the film, Nygma invents a device that reads and absorbs the thoughts of viewers, and uses it to grow rich. It demonstrates invention, though the film leans on spectacle. The film portrays him as an inventor who is mistreated by his employer, which is a different angle on his intelligence. The device is the best example of his inventiveness.A killer who exposes corruption
Strong evidenceThe Batman (2022)
In the film, the Riddler leaves a trail of coded messages that expose the city's secrets. The plan requires research, patience and an understanding of how people respond to puzzles. It shows a capable planner, though the film also shows him as a man of limited social influence. The film makes him a darker figure than earlier versions and gives his puzzles a purpose. The scale of the plan, with its many stages, is the main reason we rate this as strong evidence.Puzzle challenges in the games
Minor evidenceBatman: Arkham games
In the Arkham games, the Riddler fills the city with trophies and riddles. The scale suggests careful planning and a lot of preparation. The games use it as a mechanic, so we count it as minor evidence. The sheer number of trophies and riddles hidden around the city requires planning on a large scale, and the quality of the clues varies from simple to demanding. The games present it as a challenge for the player, so we count it only as background support for his obsession and ability.
What holds the number down
Compulsion to leave clues
Series-wide
His need to announce a puzzle gives Batman the information to catch him. A top strategist would keep silent. This is the clearest limit on his foresight. Batman exploits the habit repeatedly, following the clues straight back to him.Repeated defeats
Series-wide
The Riddler is beaten by Batman, and sometimes by lesser opponents, many times. Part of that is the structure of comics, but the pattern counts against the highest numbers. Tellingly, he rarely changes his approach.Different versions
Series-wide
The character differs across comics, films and games. We use the best-known versions and average them, so confidence stays at medium. Some versions are far more dangerous than others, so we use a middle estimate and treat the most extreme portrayals with caution.
Why 150, and not higher or lower
Deduction, knowledge and invention carry the estimate. He designs traps, ciphers and gadgets, and the best stories credit him with exceptional insight. Strategy and adaptability are held back by his compulsion, which turns his crimes into a game he can lose. That gives a number well above average but not at the top.

The debate
The Riddler is usually compared with Batman himself, with Lex Luthor and with the Joker. Batman has the better deduction under pressure. Lex has the better long-term strategy, and the Joker has the better read on people. The Riddler's skill is the design of puzzles, and he is outclassed in other areas. We rate him slightly below Lex Luthor and close to Moriarty.
