What these tests measure

Both are tests of general cognitive ability: how quickly you take in new information, spot a pattern and work out an answer. They are not knowledge tests. The math stops at percentages, ratios and averages, and the vocabulary is everyday.

Employers use them because, across decades of research, general ability has been one of the better single predictors of how quickly people learn a job. A 2022 re-analysis put that link lower than older estimates, which is one reason most employers treat the score as one input next to interviews and experience rather than a pass or fail gate.

The question types you will see

  • Verbal: analogies, synonyms and opposites, sentence completion and short deduction puzzles. See the CCAT sample questions.
  • Math and logic: word problems, tables, percentages, number series and simple deduction. No calculator is allowed on either test.
  • Spatial: shape series, odd-one-out and next-in-pattern questions. About a quarter of the CCAT, a handful on the Wonderlic.
  • Directions and attention to detail: following a written instruction exactly, or comparing names and numbers. Common on the Wonderlic; see the Wonderlic sample questions.

How scores work

Both tests give a raw score out of 50: one point per correct answer, nothing taken off for wrong ones, so never leave a question blank. Employers mostly look at your percentile, the share of test-takers you outscored.

The average CCAT score is 24 and the average Wonderlic score is about 20 to 21. Look up any score in the CCAT percentile chart or the Wonderlic score chart, and see what counts as competitive in good CCAT scores by role and good Wonderlic scores by job.

How to prepare in a week

A week is enough to learn either format. This is the short version; how to pass the CCAT and how to pass the Wonderlic go into each step.

  • Day 1: take one full timed test to find your baseline and your weakest question family.
  • Days 2 to 4: drill that family and mental math for 20 minutes a day. Write down the rule behind every miss.
  • Day 5: take a second full test and compare section scores with the first.
  • Day 6: practice pacing. Anything that has not cracked after about 30 seconds gets a guess.
  • Day 7: a light warm-up only. Sleep matters more than one extra test.

Why practice under real timing

Both tests are built so most people run out of time. Recognizing a question type at a glance, and knowing when to guess, gets you through more questions on the same clock. That is why a timed CCAT practice test or a timed Wonderlic practice test helps more than untimed question lists.

Our tests use original questions with the real question count and time limit. Your score, percentile and section breakdown are free. The optional prep pack adds explained answers, two more full tests and a 7-day plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is a job aptitude test?

A short timed reasoning test employers use early in hiring. The CCAT and the Wonderlic are the most common.

Are these practice tests free?

Yes. Both full-length tests, with score, percentile and section breakdown, are free with no sign-up.

Are these the real tests?

No. They are original tests in the same style and timing. LifeScore is not affiliated with Criteria Corp or Wonderlic, Inc.

Can you fail an aptitude test?

There is rarely a fixed pass mark. Employers compare your score with a target for the role or with other applicants.

Can you study for a cognitive aptitude test?

You cannot cram general ability, but practice under real timing usually adds a few points: you learn the question types, stop over-thinking hard items and guess instead of leaving blanks.

Do employers see every answer?

Usually not. Most see your overall score and percentile, sometimes with a section breakdown, compared with a target for the role.
