SAT score calculator: your total, the benchmarks and the ACT equivalent
Enter your Reading and Writing and Math section scores (200 to 800 each) to get your SAT total, how each compares with College Board's benchmarks (480 and 530), how the total compares with the class of 2025 mean of 1029, and the nearest ACT Composite in the official concordance. It does not convert raw answers into a score: College Board does not publish that conversion for the adaptive digital SAT.

How do I calculate my SAT score?
Add your two section scores: Reading and Writing plus Math, each from 200 to 800, gives a total from 400 to 1600. The calculator does that, then sets each part against College Board's published reference points.

Benchmarks and the mean are College Board figures; the ACT equivalent is the nearest single-point value in the official 2018 ACT/SAT concordance. College Board does not publish how raw answers convert to scores on the adaptive digital SAT, so this tool starts from section scores, not from questions right. Take the free SAT-style practice test
Can I convert raw SAT answers into a score?
Not reliably. On the digital SAT, your score depends on which questions you got right and on whether you were routed to the easier or harder second module, and College Board does not publish the conversion. Any raw-to-scaled chart for the digital SAT is someone's estimate.
The paper SAT had a fixed conversion table for each test form, so counting right answers gave you a score. The digital SAT uses item response theory: each question has its own difficulty and weight, and the second module you get depends on the first. Two students with the same number right can get different scores. That is why this calculator starts from section scores you already have, from an official practice test in Bluebook or from a real score report.
For practice between official tests, our SAT practice test gives you percent right and a score for each domain, which tells you where to work even though it is not a scaled score.
What are the SAT benchmarks?
College Board's college and career readiness benchmarks are 480 in Reading and Writing and 530 in Math. A student at a benchmark has about a 75% chance of earning a C or better in a matching first-year college course.
| Measure | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing benchmark | 480 | College Board, benchmarks |
| Math benchmark | 530 | College Board, benchmarks |
| Mean total, class of 2025 | 1029 | College Board annual report, as reported |
| Mean Reading and Writing, class of 2025 | 521 | College Board annual report, as reported |
| Mean Math, class of 2025 | 508 | College Board annual report, as reported |
| Met both benchmarks, class of 2025 | 39% | College Board annual report, as reported |
The benchmarks are a readiness line, not an admissions target. Selective colleges usually look for scores well above them; open-admission colleges may use them for course placement instead.
Move the section that is short
Eight SAT-style mocks and 32 domain drills show which domains are holding a section under its benchmark, and fix them.
The SAT Pass Pack gives you 8 full mocks on the real clock, 32 drills of 12 questions for the sections that cost you points, and a predictor that turns your mocks into the odds of reaching your target. One payment, no subscription, and your free score stays free.
Prep courses for these tests usually cost $19 to $129. The SAT Pass Pack is US$39 (£29), once.

What is my SAT score as an ACT score?
The official 2018 ACT/SAT concordance, published by ACT and College Board together, maps each ACT Composite to an SAT total. The calculator gives the ACT Composite whose SAT equivalent is nearest your total.

|---|---|
| 36 | 1590 |
| 34 | 1500 |
| 32 | 1430 |

College Board reports digital SAT scores on the same scale as the paper SAT, which is why the 2018 tables are still the ones colleges use. The full table, both ways, is on SAT vs ACT.
What percentile is my SAT score?
College Board reports two percentiles on every score report: a nationally representative percentile and a user percentile based on recent test takers. We do not reproduce them here, because we could not read College Board's current table directly, and secondhand copies disagree.
Your own score report shows your percentiles, and they are the ones to trust. As a rough guide from figures we could source, the class of 2025 mean was 1029, so a total near that is close to the middle of test takers, and a total in the 1400s puts you well into the top tenth.
Percentiles also shift from year to year as the group of test takers changes, which is another reason to read yours from your own report rather than from a chart online. A percentile tells you where you stand among test takers; it does not tell you whether a college will consider your score strong.
For what counts as a good score at the colleges you are applying to, which is the question that matters, see what is a good SAT score.
What is an SAT superscore?
A superscore combines your best Reading and Writing score and your best Math score from different test dates into one total. Many colleges superscore the SAT; others look at a single sitting or ask for all scores.
Say you score 610 in Reading and Writing and 580 in Math in March, then 590 and 640 in June. Your single-sitting best is 1230, but your superscore is 610 plus 640, or 1250. Enter the best section score from each sitting in the calculator above to see your superscore against the benchmarks.
Superscoring changes strategy. If a college superscores, you can focus a later sitting on the section you most need to raise, as long as the other section does not collapse. Check each college's testing policy on its admissions page before you plan around it.
Section scores also matter on their own. Engineering and math-heavy programs look closely at Math, and some scholarships or placement rules use a single section. The calculator shows each section against its benchmark for that reason, not just the total.
How can I raise my SAT score?
Find the domains you miss most under time pressure and fix those first. A short timed mock and a 12-question drill on the weakest domain do more than rereading notes.
- Take the free [SAT practice test](/sat-practice-test) on the real module clocks and note your two weakest domains.
- Drill each one on the [Reading and Writing](/sat-reading-and-writing-practice-test) or [Math](/sat-math-practice-test) page and learn the rule behind every miss.
- Take an official Bluebook practice test and put the section scores into this calculator.
- Repeat with the next-weakest domain until both sections clear your target.
