What is on this CNA practice test?
70 original questions in the same proportions as the real NNAAP written exam: 20 on daily living and self-care, 25 on basic nursing skills, 7 on psychosocial care and 18 on the role of the nurse aide, mixed together as they are on test day.
The questions are written the way state exams write them: a short situation with a client, then "what should the nurse aide do?" Four options, one best answer. Most wrong options are things a kind, busy person might really do, such as giving a client plain water when the care plan says thickened liquids, or skipping a turn because the client is asleep. The test is whether you know the rule that beats the kind instinct.
A few questions ask you to measure and record: add up intake in milliliters, double a 30-second pulse, write a time on the 24-hour clock. Those are generated fresh with the arithmetic checked by code, because the written exam and the skills test both expect you to record numbers correctly.

Can I practise one CNA section at a time?
Yes. Each of the four sections has its own guide with a free 12-question drill on the same pace as this test, plus the rules that win marks, worked examples and the traps.

How does the real CNA written exam compare?
The real exam is the written (or oral) part of your state's nurse aide competency evaluation: 70 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours in NNAAP states, 60 of them scored, plus a separate hands-on skills test you must also pass.

Not every state uses the NNAAP. Some states use another vendor's exam with a different length (Headmaster and Prometric states, for example), but the content is the same federal nurse aide curriculum, so the knowledge carries over. Your state candidate handbook is the final word on length, time and passing score; we link the main ones from the CNA exam guide.

What do CNA exam questions look like?
A situation, a client and four reasonable-sounding actions. Try the five below: the first two are worked step by step and the rest open when you tap.
CNA-style question 1 · Basic nursing skills
While taking morning vital signs, which finding should the nurse aide report to the nurse right away?
- AA resident who is usually talkative is suddenly drowsy and confused
- BA resident with a regular pulse of 72 beats per minute
- CA resident with respirations of 16 that are quiet and even
- DA resident with an oral temperature of 98.4 F
Worked answer
A: A resident who is usually talkative is suddenly drowsy and confused. A sudden change in alertness or thinking can signal a serious problem such as infection, low oxygen or stroke, and needs prompt reporting. The other findings are normal and expected, even though they are still recorded.
CNA-style question 2 · Measurement and recording
The nurse aide counts a regular radial pulse for 30 seconds and gets 35 beats. What pulse rate should be recorded?
- A140 beats per minute
- B35 beats per minute
- C70 beats per minute
- D80 beats per minute
Worked answer
C: 70 beats per minute. A regular radial pulse counted for 30 seconds is multiplied by 2 to give the rate per minute: 35 × 2 = 70. If the rhythm is irregular, count for a full 60 seconds instead.
CNA-style question 3 · Spiritual and cultural needs
A client is about to receive a bed bath. The client explains that personal space and touch from strangers make her uncomfortable. What is the best approach for the nurse aide?
- AAsk a family member to complete the bath
- BExplain each step before touching, ask permission, and report the concern to the nurse
- CComplete the bath quickly to reduce discomfort
- DTell the client touch is required for care
Show the answer
B: Explain each step before touching, ask permission, and report the concern to the nurse. Comfort with touch and personal space varies by person and culture. Explaining steps, asking permission, and informing the nurse respects the client. Rushing ignores the concern and may cause distress.
CNA-style question 4 · Member of the care team
A client's care plan requires two staff members for transfers. A coworker says, "We are short-staffed and he is light, so just do it alone." What should the nurse aide do?
- ATransfer him alone since he has been fine before
- BTransfer him alone but move very slowly and carefully
- CFollow the care plan and wait for a second person or ask the nurse for help
- DAsk him to hold the bed rail and stand up on his own
Show the answer
C: Follow the care plan and wait for a second person or ask the nurse for help. The care plan is the guide for safe care, and aides follow it even when busy. A transfer done alone against the plan risks a fall or injury to the client and the aide. Ask for help instead.
CNA-style question 5 · Measurement and recording
A care plan says a client should be turned at 2345. What time is that on a 12-hour clock?
- A1:45 AM
- B11:45 AM
- C9:45 PM
- D11:45 PM
Show the answer
D: 11:45 PM. For hours 13 to 23, subtract 12 and use PM: 23 − 12 = 11, so 2345 is 11:45 PM.
These come from our public sample set, so none of them is in a paid mock or drill.
For twelve more, each worked with the trap it sets, see the CNA test questions.
What score should I aim for on a CNA practice test?
Aim for 85% or more on our mocks. States do not publish one national pass mark; reported cut-offs sit around 70% to 80% of the scored questions, and a margin above that covers a bad morning.
| Band | Percent correct | On a 70-question mock | What to do next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting out | Under 60% | Under 42 | Learn the safety rules first: infection control, client rights, what to report |
| Building | 60% to 74% | 42 to 52 | Drill your weakest section, then sit another full mock |
| Close to ready | 75% to 84% | 53 to 59 | Tighten the traps you keep falling for; read every explanation |
| Exam-ready | 85% and up | 60 and up | Hold it on two more mocks and book the exam |
What your own state needs, and how the score is reported, is on the CNA passing score page.
Do CNA practice tests actually help you pass?
Yes, if you use them to find and fix the rules you get wrong rather than to memorize answers. The written exam repeats a short list of principles, so each one you learn wins several questions.
The rules that decide most questions are few: safety first, then the client's rights and dignity, then report to the nurse whatever is new, abnormal or outside your role. Most wrong answers break one of those three. Reading each explanation after a mock, even for the questions you got right, is where the learning happens.
Retaking this free test mostly measures memory, because it is one fixed form. The Pass Pack adds 7 more full mocks with no repeated questions, 4 more drills for every section and an explanation for every answer, so you can tell real progress from recall. The study plan is in how to pass the CNA exam.
