What does the role of the nurse aide cover?

Four areas with a lot of overlap.

  1. Communication

Open-ended questions, listening, communicating with hearing or vision loss, objective reporting and charting, the 24-hour clock.

  2. Client rights

Privacy, confidentiality, choice, refusing care, personal possessions, freedom from restraint and abuse, addressing clients by the name they prefer.

  3. Legal and ethical behavior

Abuse and neglect and reporting them, no gifts or tips, scope of practice, negligence, the nurse aide registry.

  4. Member of the health care team

Who delegates (licensed nurses), following the care plan, asking for training, reporting before leaving the unit, in-service hours.

What do role of the nurse aide questions look like?

Polite-sounding options where only one respects the rules. The first two are worked.

  1. CNA-style question 1 · Legal and ethical behavior

A nurse aide sees a coworker slap a resident. What should the aide do?

    1. AAsk the resident whether to report it
    2. BReport it if it happens again
    3. CMake sure the resident is safe and report it to the nurse at once
    4. DTalk to the coworker privately first
    Worked answer

C: Make sure the resident is safe and report it to the nurse at once. Suspected abuse is reported immediately, as federal rules and every facility policy require. The aide does not investigate or wait.

The trap: Loyalty to a coworker, or giving them a chance, is the trap.

  2. CNA-style question 2 · Member of the team

A nurse asks the aide to use a mechanical lift the aide has never been trained on. What should the aide do?

    1. AAsk a family member to help
    2. BTell the nurse about the lack of training and ask to be shown
    3. CUse it carefully and follow the label
    4. DDo the transfer by hand instead
    Worked answer

B: Tell the nurse about the lack of training and ask to be shown. An aide may refuse a task they are not trained for but must say so and ask for training. Improvising risks injury.

  3. CNA-style question 3 · Client rights

A resident's daughter asks the aide about her mother's diagnosis. What should the aide do?

    1. ATell her what is in the chart
    2. BAsk the roommate what she knows
    3. CRefer the daughter to the nurse
    4. DTell her only the good news
    Show the answer

C: Refer the daughter to the nurse. Medical information is confidential and is shared by licensed staff with authorized people.

  4. CNA-style question 4 · Communication

Which question best encourages a resident to talk?

    1. A"Is the room too cold?"
    2. B"Do you like your room?"
    3. C"How are you finding the new room?"
    4. D"Your room is nice, isn't it?"
    Show the answer

C: "How are you finding the new room?". An open-ended question invites more than yes or no.

What rules win role of the nurse aide questions?

Five rules.

  1. Report abuse at once

Suspected abuse or neglect goes to the nurse immediately, with the client kept safe.

  2. The client chooses

Clients may refuse, choose and keep their routines. Explain, offer, report.

  3. Confidential means confidential

No details in hallways or on social media; family questions go to the nurse.

  4. The nurse delegates

Take tasks from licensed nurses, follow the care plan, and say when you are not trained.

  5. Write facts

Chart what you saw and measured, with times, never opinions.

What traps are set in role of the nurse aide questions?

Answers that are polite, loyal or helpful but break a rule.

  • Accepting a small tip because refusing seems rude.
  • Talking to a coworker before reporting suspected abuse.
  • Following an order from a doctor in the hallway.
  • Answering a relative's question about a diagnosis.
  • Calling an older adult "honey" or "grandma".
  • Charting "seems depressed" instead of what you observed.
