The highest estimated IQs in recorded history
Highly gifted historical minds
Exceptional leaders and visionaries
Based on historiometric estimates, figures like Alan Turing (170+), Mozart (165+), Leonardo da Vinci (160+), Isaac Newton (160+), Albert Einstein (160+), and Shakespeare (160+) rank among the highest. These are retrospective estimates based on their documented cognitive achievements, not direct test scores.
Historical IQ estimates use a method called historiometrics, developed by researchers like Catherine Cox and later refined by Dean Keith Simonton. It analyses documented childhood development, educational achievements, creative output, problem-solving ability, and contemporary accounts to estimate cognitive ability relative to the general population.
Historical IQ estimates are educated approximations, not precise measurements. Modern IQ tests did not exist before the early 1900s. However, historiometric methods provide a useful framework for comparing cognitive ability across eras, especially when multiple lines of evidence converge on similar estimates.
Across our database of 92 historical figures, the average estimated IQ is approximately 149. This is well above the population mean of 100, which is expected since historical prominence correlates with exceptional cognitive ability.
Einstein never took a modern IQ test. The estimate of 160+ is based on his extraordinary contributions to theoretical physics, his documented thought processes, and analyses by cognitive researchers. Some estimates place him higher, but 160+ is the most widely cited historiometric figure.
