The highest IQ artists and painters in history

Leonardo da Vinci tops this list of 11 painters and sculptors at 160+. Visual artists are the hardest group to estimate, because their genius is visual and few left writing about how they thought; none took an IQ test, and each figure has its basis on the profile.

Estimate: the working figure on each profile, with its range. None is a measured test score unless the basis says so.

About this list

Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael and Rembrandt have figures from Cox's 1926 study, which rated documented early achievement in every field. Leonardo's notebooks, filled with engineering, anatomy and optics, give an unusually rich record; most painters left far less. For artists born after 1850, such as Picasso, Kahlo and Dalí, the numbers are editorial markers with very low confidence.

Visual-spatial ability is a real part of intelligence and a large part of modern nonverbal tests. But painting also depends on hand skill, long apprenticeship and an eye for what to leave out. That makes an artist's estimate one of the least certain on the site, and the ranges on these profiles are wide for that reason.

Where would you land next to Leonardo da Vinci?

Leonardo da Vinci's 160+ is an estimate from the historical record, with a working range of 160 to 180. On the standard IQ scale an IQ of 160 sits at the 99.997th percentile: about 1 in 31,600 people score that high. Nobody can test Leonardo da Vinci now. What the ranking shows

Polymaths rank highest. Leonardo and Michelangelo were engineers, anatomists, architects and poets as well as painters, and the breadth of their documented work drives their estimates. Painters known only for painting sit lower, even when their art is just as great.

The Dutch and Italian masters who left almost no writing, such as Vermeer and Caravaggio, carry the widest uncertainty. Their pictures show exceptional visual analysis, especially of light, but there is almost nothing else to go on.

Modern artists are judged on documented intellectual range as much as on art. Picasso's restless reinvention and Dalí's interest in science and psychology inform their markers; Van Gogh's letters, among the most eloquent ever written by a painter, inform his.

Seeing patterns

Visual reasoning tests ask you to see how shapes, positions and shading change across a grid. Artists train that kind of looking for years. The comparison is loose, but it is one reason a visual IQ test is a natural way to see how your own eye for structure stacks up.

Frequently asked questions

What was Leonardo da Vinci's IQ?

Cox's 1926 study estimated about 135 for his childhood and 150 as a young man, corrected to 180. LifeScore lists 160+ with a range, because Cox's scale runs high. Claims of 200 or 220 have no source.

Which artist had the highest IQ?

Leonardo da Vinci has the highest documented estimate among artists, from Cox 1926, followed by Michelangelo. Both were polymaths, which is why their documented records score so high.

Are artists smart?

Many great artists show high visual-spatial and creative ability, and some were outstanding scholars as well. Artistic success also depends on skills an IQ test does not measure, so a moderate estimate says nothing about an artist's greatness.

What was Picasso's IQ?

Unknown. He was born in 1881, after Cox's study period, and never took a published test. LifeScore uses an editorial marker in the 140s with very low confidence.
