Johannes Vermeer in brief
Johannes Vermeer was born in Delft in 1632, the son of an innkeeper and art dealer. Almost nothing is known of his training. He joined the Delft painters' guild in 1653 and painted quiet domestic scenes lit by soft window light, including Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Milkmaid. He worked slowly, producing perhaps 45 paintings, of which about 34 survive. He and his wife had 15 children. He died in debt in 1675 and was largely forgotten until the 19th century.
What was Johannes Vermeer's IQ?
No figure exists. LifeScore lists about 140 as an editorial marker, range 125 to 155. It rests on his exceptional visual precision and optical understanding, though so little is known about his life that any figure is speculative.
Did Vermeer use a camera obscura?
Some features of his paintings, such as blurred highlights and perspective, suggest he may have used an optical device. The inventor Tim Jenison argued in the 2013 film Tim's Vermeer that he used lenses and mirrors. Many art historians remain unconvinced.
Who is the Girl with a Pearl Earring?
Nobody knows. The painting, from around 1665, is a tronie, a study of a face rather than a portrait of a named person. Theories have named his daughter Maria, but there is no evidence.
How many Vermeer paintings are there?
About 34 paintings are generally accepted, though experts disagree on a few. In 2023 the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam gathered 28 of them for the largest Vermeer exhibition ever held.

How Vermeer thought
Vermeer reasoned with light: how it falls on different surfaces, how colour shifts in shadow and how small highlights create texture. That kind of precise visual analysis is related to the spatial and perceptual skills tested in visual puzzles.
The evidence behind the estimate
An estimate built from the historical record, not a recovered test score.
What supports it
- About 34 paintings survive and are studied with scientific imaging.
- Delft guild records document his membership.
- Technical studies reveal his materials and methods.
What it cannot prove
- Almost no documents about his thinking survive.
- Musical and visual genius draw on abilities, such as pitch memory and visual imagination, that an IQ test only partly samples.
- An editorial marker is a comparison aid built from achievement, not a measurement, and two careful readers could place it ten points apart.
