Armin Arlert IQ

Armin's value in the story is the ability to find the one idea that changes a situation, usually under pressure and usually when he has no strength to bring. Those ideas are real: the plan to plug the breach at Trost, the unmasking of Annie, the talking that ends the story. What holds him below the top tier is that he is often the second mind in the room, working beside Erwin or Eren, and that he did not see where Eren was heading until it was very late.

1. The boulder plan at Trost

   With the wall breached and the defence collapsing, Armin proposes using Eren's Titan form to carry a boulder and plug the hole in the gate. It is a small idea with a huge effect, and it arrives from a cadet who had just been frozen by fear in his first fight. That combination is the useful signal: he finds the unlikely answer in the worst moment, without the physical skill to carry it out himself. The plan rests on a novel use of an asset nobody had yet understood, which is a real problem solved from a standing start.

2. Deducing Annie is the Female Titan

   Armin reasons that the Female Titan must be someone from the ranks who trained with them, and works out that the culprit is Annie Leonhart. He then helps set up the operation in Stohess that captures her. The chain combines observation, elimination and a guess about how she would act if she believed she had not been found. It is the clearest detective-style deduction he gets, and it succeeds in a case where the military had failed to see the person in front of them.

3. Learning the world from a book

   Armin is the one who reads about the world outside the walls, and it is his book that gives Eren and Mikasa a picture of what might lie beyond them. His breadth is what separates him from the other cadets: he brings facts, and a habit of questioning the official story, into a society told there is nothing more to know. It shows curiosity and learning speed, and it is the ground for his later insights. Reading is a modest feat, so the entry is weighted lightly.

4. Chosen for the Colossal Titan

   After the fighting at Shiganshina, Levi decides to give the serum to Armin, and Armin goes on to take the Colossal Titan's power by eating Bertolt. The choice is Levi's, not Armin's, so it does not prove a plan. It does show how the people around him rated his mind: when one dose could bring back the Survey Corps' best commander, they backed the cadet who had solved Trost and Stohess. That is a social signal more than a feat, so it carries little weight.

5. Commander and negotiator after the war

   After Hange's death Armin becomes the 15th commander of the Survey Corps, and once the Rumbling has been stopped he takes part in the peace negotiations led by Queen Historia. Being trusted to lead in an emergency by people who have watched him both fail and succeed is itself a kind of evidence. He does not carry Erwin's record of system-building, so the promotion reflects need as well as merit, and the entry is placed at moderate weight rather than strong.

• Freezing at TrostBattle of TrostArmin's first real fight sees him lose his nerve, and Eren pays for it by saving him at great cost. It is age-appropriate, but it shows that ideas alone do not carry him and that he is not yet a safe operator when things go wrong.

At his age, Armin is strong on deduction, adaptability and reading people, and average on breadth and invention. Learning speed is high, since he absorbs what he reads and applies it in the field. The estimate is age-normed: an adult with the same record would sit nearer 130, but a teenager solving problems that trained adults miss earns more. The error column stays real, and he is not a full-time planner in the way Erwin is.
