Before the 57th expedition, Erwin suspects that someone inside the military is a Titan shifter. He shares the real plan only with soldiers who joined more than five years earlier, so the newer recruits, including the spy, do not know it. In the Forest of Giant Trees he nearly captures the Female Titan with a prepared trap.

At Shiganshina, with the Beast Titan throwing rocks that will wipe out his soldiers, Erwin sees the only chance: lead the recruits on a suicide charge as a distraction while Levi gets close to the Beast. He gives the speech, leads from the front and is mortally wounded. The plan works.
