Who is Shikamaru Nara?
Shikamaru Nara thinks almost everything is a drag. He would rather lie on a roof watching clouds than train, fight or lead. That is the joke. The truth is that he is the best strategist in his generation of ninja.
In the anime, his mentor Asuma remarks that Shikamaru's IQ is over 200. That is an in-universe claim, and on this page we treat it with the same caution as any fictional number.

Beating Temari, then quitting
In the Chunin Exams, Shikamaru faces Temari, who can blow him away with a giant fan. He stretches his shadow technique using shadows around the arena, including one cast by his own makeshift parachute, and traps her. Then, with his chakra nearly gone and several moves already mapped out, he forfeits. He is the only one of his group promoted.

Planning with Asuma
Shikamaru and Asuma play shogi constantly, and Asuma uses it to teach him about the king, meaning the people a ninja protects. After Asuma is killed by Akatsuki members Hidan and Kakuzu, Shikamaru takes that lesson literally and builds a plan to avenge him.

Burying Hidan
Hidan is immortal, so he cannot be killed in the normal way. Shikamaru plans around that. He separates Hidan from his partner, lures him into the Nara clan's forest, where he has prepared in advance, and buries him alive. It is a solution only someone who thinks many moves ahead would find.
