Off the human scale

These characters are superhuman by design, such as machines and alien minds. A human IQ number does not describe them, so they are listed apart from the ranking and their figures are for reference only.

How we ranked them

Every estimate follows the same five-part test: abstract reasoning, planning under uncertainty, learning speed and breadth, invention, and how often the character is outplayed. Errors count against the number, so a character who is repeatedly fooled cannot sit at the top.

Power is not intelligence. A character who can level a city is not smarter for it, and several very strong fighters sit lower here than characters who never throw a punch. Estimates are age-normed at the character's age in the story, and many anime geniuses are teenagers.

Where a series states a number, we note it separately and still do our own estimate. Meruem is superhuman by design, so a human IQ scale is a poor fit and the figure is for ranking only. The full rules are on the method page.

Why each one sits where it does

  1. Dr. Stone

Senku Ishigami's IQ is about 165 (range 155 to 175): the widest scientific knowledge and fastest practical invention in his cast, discounted for a story that keeps handing him what he needs.
  2. Death Note

L's IQ is best estimated at about 160 (range 150 to 168): he pins down Kira's region and then Kira's household from almost nothing, yet never gets proof.
  3. Bleach

Sosuke Aizen's IQ is best estimated at 160 (range 148 to 172): a patient long-game schemer with a century of flawless deception, undone by contempt for the people he had underestimated.
  4. Steins;Gate

Kurisu Makise's IQ is around 155 (range 145 to 165): a real prodigy in neuroscience and theory, backed by a published record, though she is narrower than Senku or Tony Stark.
  5. Death Note

Light Yagami's IQ is around 155 (range 145 to 165): a brilliant, adaptive planner who beats L, but whose pride and dependence on proxies finally cost him against Near.
  6. Attack on Titan

Erwin Smith's IQ is best estimated at 150 (range 138 to 162): an exceptional tactician and political operator whose plans work, at a cost in lives a top planner would manage better.
  7. Naruto

Itachi Uchiha's IQ is best estimated at 150 (range 140 to 160): an exceptional long-range planner and reader of people, held back by one plan that cost him everything.
  8. Classroom of the Elite

Kiyotaka Ayanokoji's IQ is about 150 (range 140 to 160): a calm, adaptive planner who steers his class from the shadows, though his opponents are teenagers and much of his legend is told.
  9. Code Geass

Lelouch's IQ is about 150 (range 140 to 160): a gifted tactician who plans well and improvises brilliantly, but leans on Geass and is repeatedly blindsided by family and by allies.
  10. Psycho-Pass

Shogo Makishima's IQ is about 150 (range 138 to 160). He builds crimes through other people and evades a system that measures everyone, and his weakness is the very obsession that sets him on that path.
  11. Death Note

Near's IQ is about 148 (range 138 to 158): a patient successor to L who catches Kira through preparation, a counter-trap and a team, rather than through solo brilliance.
  12. Code Geass

Schneizel's IQ is about 148 (range 136 to 158). He is the one strategist Lelouch cannot easily out-think, though his own plan depends on a weapon and he is outplayed in the end.
  13. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Edward Elric's IQ is best estimated at 145 (range 132 to 158): an exceptional alchemy prodigy with sharp scientific reasoning, held back by a catastrophic early mistake.
  14. Monster

Johan Liebert's IQ is roughly 145 (range 130 to 160): a gifted manipulator whose greatest feats are psychological and hard to measure, which is why the estimate is wide.
  15. Naruto

Shikamaru Nara's IQ is best estimated at 145 (range 135 to 155): a first-rate tactician whose preparation beats stronger enemies, but not quite the flawless 200-plus genius the canon line suggests.
  16. Detective Conan (Case Closed)

Shinichi Kudo's IQ is best estimated at 145 (range 132 to 158): an exceptional detective with hundreds of solved cases, outplayed at the start and still short of closing his main case.
  17. No Game No Life

Sora's IQ is about 145 (range 132 to 158). He is half of Blank, an undefeated pair of gamers, and wins by reading people and rules, though much of the show's brilliance belongs to his sister Shiro.
  18. Classroom of the Elite

Arisu Sakayanagi's IQ is about 142 (range 130 to 152). She leads the top class with chess-like strategy, though her health and her own pride place limits on her plans.
  19. Attack on Titan

Armin Arlert's IQ is best estimated at 140 (range 128 to 152): a gifted improviser and negotiator for his age, with real strategic instinct but an uneven record and little raw power.
  20. Durarara!!

Izaya Orihara's IQ is best estimated at 140 (range 128 to 152): a gifted manipulator of gangs and rumours, but stabbed, outplayed and undone by his fixation on Shizuo.
  21. Naruto

Kakashi Hatake's IQ is about 140 (range 128 to 150). He is a prodigy who became a ninja at a very young age, with strong tactics and memory, though some of his edge comes from a borrowed eye.
  22. Spy x Family

Loid Forger's IQ is about 140 (range 128 to 150). As the spy Twilight he infiltrates, adapts and plans well under pressure, but his domestic life shows the limits of his reading of people.
  23. Kaguya-sama: Love Is War

Miyuki Shirogane's IQ is about 140 (range 128 to 150). He is the top student at an elite school and wins the love war through effort and cunning, which is a different sort of genius from Kaguya's.
  24. Log Horizon

Shiroe's IQ is about 140 (range 128 to 152). He leads by planning and negotiation after thousands of players are trapped in a fantasy game world, and the show makes him the cleverest player in it.
  25. Death Note

Mello's IQ is around 138 (range 128 to 148): a gifted, aggressive problem-solver who gets results the cautious cannot, and who pays for the risks.
  26. Classroom of the Elite

Suzune Horikita's IQ is about 138 (range 126 to 148). She is an excellent student and a capable planner, whose proud and solitary approach limits her in a school built on cooperation.
  27. Kaguya-sama: Love Is War

Kaguya Shinomiya's IQ is best estimated at about 135 (range 122 to 148): a near-top student and precise planner, held back by pride and a habit of overthinking tiny stakes.
  28. Jujutsu Kaisen

Satoru Gojo's IQ is best estimated at 135 (range 120 to 150): a gifted innovator and teacher whose strength far outruns his strategic judgement, and who is twice caught by traps.
  29. Hunter x Hunter

Killua Zoldyck's IQ is best estimated at about 130 (range 118 to 145): a fast learner and sharp tactician whose reasoning is real but narrower than the genius label suggests.
  30. Steins;Gate

Okabe Rintaro's IQ is about 128 (range 118 to 138): sharp, stubborn and a superb leader, but the real scientific talent in his lab is Kurisu, and his defining power is not intellectual.
  31. Naruto

Naruto Uzumaki's IQ is best estimated at about 118 (range 105 to 132): weak on academics and deduction, but a genuinely creative improviser who is unusually good with people.
  32. Dragon Ball

Goku's IQ is best estimated at about 108 (range 98 to 120): average outside combat, but with exceptional learning speed and improvisation once a fight starts.
  33. Hunter x Hunter · off the human scale

Meruem's IQ is placed at about 200 (range 185 to 220), but as a non-human by design human scales do not really apply. He learns and adapts faster than anyone we cover.

Smartest anime characters, ranked: common questions

Who is the smartest anime character?

On our evidence-based ranking it is Senku Ishigami (Dr. Stone) at about 165, followed by L Lawliet at 160 and Sosuke Aizen at 160. The order changes if you weigh invention over planning, so every profile shows the reasoning.

How do you estimate an anime character's IQ?

We score what the character does on screen: deduction, planning, learning speed, invention and how often they are outplayed. We then map the evidence to an IQ band with a range and a confidence level. It is fan analysis, not a measurement.

Is Light Yagami smarter than L?

It is close, and depends on what you count. Our profiles rate both as exceptional, with L stronger at deduction and Light at long-range planning and adaptation. See the Light vs L page for the round-by-round comparison.

Why are some fan favourites ranked lower than expected?

Strength, charisma and plot armour do not raise an intelligence estimate, and repeated errors lower it. Several very powerful characters sit far lower here than characters who win by thinking.

Are these IQs official?

No. A few series state a number for a character, and we say so where they do. Every other figure is our own estimate with a range.
