Rintaro Okabe calls himself Hououin Kyouma, a mad scientist at war with a shadowy Organization. In reality he is a university student running a tiny lab above a TV repair shop with his friends Mayuri and Daru.
Then their microwave starts sending messages to the past, and the act becomes deadly serious.

Okabe and his friends accidentally build a phone-microwave combination that can send text messages into the past, which they call D-mails. Okabe is the one who takes the strange results seriously, records them and keeps testing, turning a malfunction into a discovery.

Reliving the same days
When Mayuri is killed, Okabe uses Kurisu's Time Leap Machine to go back again and again, trying different ways to save her. Each attempt fails. Slowly he works out that he has to undo the D-mails one by one to return to a world line where she lives.

Operation Skuld
In the finale Okabe needs to save Kurisu without changing what his past self saw. He goes back and arranges for his past self to find Kurisu apparently dead in a pool of blood, when the blood is actually his own. The observed past stays the same; the outcome changes. It is the smartest plan in the story.
