Who is Mello?
Mello, real name Mihael Keehl, was ranked second among L's successors at Wammy's House, just behind Near. When he hears L is dead, he refuses to work with Near and leaves to chase Kira his own way.
His way involves the mafia, kidnappings, explosives and a constant supply of chocolate.

Kidnapping Sayu Yagami
Mello's group kidnaps Light's sister Sayu and demands the task force's Death Note in exchange. The handover works: Mello gets the notebook and, with it, the shinigami Sidoh, who comes to Earth to get it back. It is a reckless move, and it puts real power in Mello's hands for the first time.

Surviving the raid
When the task force raids his hideout, Mello sets off explosives rather than be captured. He survives with serious burn scars across his face, and Light's father Soichiro Yagami is killed in the operation. Mello keeps moving, with less backup and more determination.

Taking Takada
Near the end, Mello and his friend Matt kidnap Kiyomi Takada, Kira's spokesperson. Mello is killed soon after, but the kidnapping forces Kira's side to act outside its plan, and that is what lets Near find and swap the real Death Note.
