Who is Near?
Near, real name Nate River, grew up at Wammy's House, the orphanage that trained possible successors to L. After L's death he leads the SPK, a special unit set up to catch Kira, from a room full of toys.
He is younger than Light, physically fragile and almost emotionless. He is also the one who finally corners him.

Near reviews L's investigation and concludes, as L did, that Light Yagami is Kira, now leading the Japanese task force that is supposed to be hunting Kira. He cannot prove it, so he spends the rest of the story building a situation where Light will prove it himself.

The swapped notebook
Near has his agent Gevanni follow Teru Mikami, Kira's chosen helper, and secretly replace the Death Note Mikami relies on with a fake. When Mikami writes names at the planned meeting, nobody dies, and the one name missing from his list is Light's.

The Yellow Box warehouse
Near arranges a meeting with Light and the task force at a warehouse. Light believes Mikami will kill everyone there. Instead, Near reveals the fake notebook in front of the whole task force, exposing Light as Kira. He later acknowledges that Mello's actions made the win possible.
