Who is Johan Liebert?
Johan Liebert is the villain of Naoki Urasawa's Monster. As a child he is shot and brought to a hospital in Düsseldorf, where the Japanese surgeon Dr Kenzo Tenma saves his life instead of operating on the town's mayor. Soon after, the doctors who punished Tenma for that choice begin to die.
Years later Tenma realises the boy he saved is a killer, and sets out to stop him.

The hospital deaths
After Tenma's surgery, the hospital director and senior doctors who had sidelined him are found dead. Johan was a child recovering in the same hospital. It is the first sign of his method: people who stand in his way die, and nobody can link it to him.

Kinderheim 511
The series reveals that Johan spent time at Kinderheim 511, an East German orphanage that experimented on children's minds. As a child, he caused the people there to turn on each other, leaving it in ruins. He was already manipulating adults before most children can ride a bike.

Ruhenheim
Near the end, Johan goes to the small town of Ruhenheim. Within a short time the townspeople, influenced by his agents and his whispers, begin killing each other. He does not fire a shot himself. It is the clearest demonstration in the series of how much damage he can do through other people.
