The highest IQ inventors in history

Archimedes leads 21 inventors at 165+. Invention mixes reasoning with experiment, money and timing, so these estimates are some of the least certain on the site; none of these people took a modern IQ test, and every profile states its basis.

Estimate: the working figure on each profile, with its range. None is a measured test score unless the basis says so.

About this list

An invention is evidence of a particular kind of intelligence: seeing a problem, breaking it into parts and testing until something works. The Wright brothers built a wind tunnel when published lift data failed them; Watt measured where the Newcomen engine wasted heat; Shannon reduced communication to yes-or-no choices. Those are reasoning steps you can name.

But invention also depends on capital, collaborators and luck, and many famous inventions had several inventors at once. Bell and Gray filed telephone papers on the same day; Morse relied on partners for key engineering. The estimates here try to credit the reasoning without crediting the business, and the profiles explain where each number comes from.

How would you score?

Where would you land next to Archimedes?

Archimedes' 165+ is an estimate from the historical record, with a working range of 155 to 175. On the standard IQ scale an IQ of 165 sits at the 99.99926th percentile: about 1 in 136,000 people score that high. Nobody can test Archimedes now. You can find out where you sit on the same scale.

What the ranking shows

Theorists who also built things rank highest: Archimedes, Leonardo, Huygens, Babbage and Shannon all combined mathematics with machines. Their documented work shows abstract reasoning applied to physical problems, which is close to what reasoning tests measure.

Practical inventors and industrialists sit lower. Edison ran a laboratory that tested thousands of materials; Ford was a brilliant organiser of production who stumbled on general-knowledge questions in court. Their success shows persistence and practical judgement, which an IQ score only partly captures.

Nikola Tesla's place is a good example of separating legend from evidence. Claims of an IQ of 310 have no source at all. His documented achievements, including the polyphase AC system, support a high estimate on their own, and his profile uses those instead.

Frequently asked questions

Which inventor had the highest IQ?

Among inventors with profiles here, Archimedes has the highest estimate, followed at about 160 by Leonardo da Vinci, Charles Babbage, Claude Shannon, Nikola Tesla and Robert Hooke. None was tested; Leonardo has a Cox 1926 figure, and the others are editorial markers.

What was Thomas Edison's IQ?

Unknown. He was born in 1847, but no Cox figure for him could be confirmed. LifeScore uses about 145 as an editorial marker, reflecting a prolific, practical inventor whose laboratory method mattered as much as individual insight.

Was Tesla smarter than Edison?

The estimates put Tesla higher, mainly because of his theoretical work on alternating current. But they had very different styles, and Edison's systematic laboratory produced far more working products. Neither was ever tested.

Do inventors need a high IQ?

Most famous inventors were clearly above average, but invention also rewards persistence, curiosity and access to tools and money. Many important inventions came from teams rather than single geniuses.
