The highest IQ writers and poets in history
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe heads this list of 33 writers at 190+. Writers were among the people Catharine Cox rated most highly in 1926, because their precocious reading and early verse were carefully recorded; none took an IQ test, and every figure has its method on the profile.

About this list
Literary genius is mostly verbal and creative, and verbal reasoning is one of the strongest parts of general intelligence. That is one reason writers do well in historiometric studies: their childhood reading, letters and juvenile poems survive, and Cox could rate exactly how far ahead of their age they were. Goethe, Coleridge, Leopardi and Byron all have Cox figures.
Most modern writers were born after Cox's 1850 cut-off. For them, such as Joyce, Tolkien and Nabokov, the numbers are editorial markers drawn from documented evidence: degrees, languages, scholarly work and the structure of the books themselves. They carry very low confidence and say so.

What the ranking shows
The highest figures go to writers who were also scholars or scientists. Goethe did serious work on optics and botany; Leopardi taught himself Greek and Hebrew and wrote a history of astronomy at 15; Tolkien was an Oxford professor who built working languages; Nabokov published real research on butterflies. Breadth of documented learning raises an estimate.
Style is invisible to these numbers. Jane Austen, Emily Dickinson or Hemingway cannot be ranked on what makes them great, because no method turns irony, voice or emotional truth into points. Read the list as an index of documented intellectual range, not of literary quality.
Popular legends get trimmed. Claims that Shakespeare or Goethe had an IQ of 200 or more come from internet lists with no sources. Where a real study exists, the profile quotes it and adjusts it; where none exists, the profile says so rather than repeating the number.
Verbal reasoning and visual reasoning
Most modern IQ tests, including the LifeScore test, lean on visual reasoning so that language and schooling matter less. A great writer's strength is often verbal first. If you are a strong reader and writer, a visual matrix test shows a different side of your thinking, which is part of what makes the comparison interesting.
