About this list

Musical genius is a hard case for intelligence estimates. Composition draws on pitch memory, a sense of large-scale form and years of training from early childhood, and IQ tests sample only part of that. Cox rated composers on the same rules as everyone else: what they could do at each age compared with an ordinary child. Mozart touring Europe at six gives her a lot to work with.

For composers outside her ratings, LifeScore uses editorial markers from the documented record: training, output, innovation and contemporary accounts. They carry very low confidence. The table is best read as a map of documented precocity and craft, not as a measure of how good the music is.

Where would you land next to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart?

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 165+ is an estimate from the historical record, with a working range of 145 to 175. On the standard IQ scale an IQ of 165 sits at the 99.99926th percentile: about 1 in 136,000 people score that high. Nobody can test Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart now. What the ranking shows

The composers who rank highest are the ones whose childhoods were most remarkable on paper. Mozart composed from five; Mendelssohn and Schubert produced mature works in their teens. Bach and Handel rank high for their command of counterpoint, the most logically demanding style in Western music, where several independent lines must fit together at every moment.

Several composers taught themselves the crucial skills. Haydn learned counterpoint from a textbook while scraping a living; Tchaikovsky trained in law and only entered a conservatory at 22. Self-teaching at a high level is strong evidence of learning ability, and the profiles weigh it.

Innovation does not map neatly onto IQ. Debussy broke the rules of harmony, Wagner rebuilt opera and Beethoven wrote his late quartets while deaf. Their importance rests on originality and courage, which no estimate can rank.

Music and reasoning

Composing a fugue or a symphony means tracking how small motifs transform across a long structure, which is pattern reasoning on a large scale. That is one reason musical training correlates modestly with reasoning scores. A matrix test is a different kind of pattern problem, and an interesting way to compare a musical mind with the composers above.

Frequently asked questions

What was Mozart's IQ?

Cox's 1926 study estimated about 150 for his childhood and 155 as a young man, corrected to 165. LifeScore lists 165 with a range, and notes that Cox's scale runs higher than modern norms. He was never tested.

Which composer had the highest IQ?

Mozart has the highest figure, about 165 from Cox's corrected ratings, followed by Bach and Beethoven. No composer's IQ was measured, and differences of a few points between them mean very little.

Does music make you smarter?

Learning an instrument is linked to modest gains in some reasoning and memory skills, especially in childhood, but the "Mozart effect" of simply listening to music is small and short-lived. Musicians often score above average partly because families who provide lessons also provide other advantages.

Why is Beethoven lower than some people expect?

His childhood was less well documented than Mozart's and he developed later as a composer, so historiometric methods rate him a little more cautiously. His achievement as an adult is not in doubt.
