Thomas Wolsey in brief
Thomas Wolsey was born in Ipswich around 1473, the son of a butcher and innkeeper. He took his Oxford degree at about 15, earning the nickname "the boy bachelor". Ordained a priest, he rose through royal service to become Henry VIII's chief minister, Archbishop of York, a cardinal and Lord Chancellor from 1515. He built Hampton Court and organised the Field of the Cloth of Gold. Failing to secure the king's annulment, he fell from power and died in 1530 on his way to face treason charges.
What was Cardinal Wolsey's IQ?
He was never tested. A secondary tabulation of Cox's 1926 study lists a corrected estimate of 200, among the very highest of her 301 subjects. Cox's scale runs high, so LifeScore lists 175 with a working range of 170 to 200.
Why did Cox rate Wolsey so high?
Cox scored early achievement relative to age. Wolsey's Oxford degree at about 15 and his rapid rise from humble origins to running the kingdom gave him a very high rating, though records of his childhood are thin and the figure is uncertain.
Why did Wolsey fall from power?
Henry VIII wanted his marriage to Catherine of Aragon annulled so he could marry Anne Boleyn. Wolsey could not persuade the pope, Anne's faction turned against him, and in 1529 he was stripped of office. He died in 1530 on his way to London to face treason charges.
Where does the 200 figure come from?
The 200 is Catharine Cox's corrected estimate from her 1926 study of 301 eminent people born between 1450 and 1850. She rated each person from biographical records of what they could do as a child and young adult, then corrected for gaps in the record.
Cox's numbers sit on an old ratio-IQ scale. One secondary tabulation subtracts about 22 points for the Flynn effect, which puts Thomas Wolsey near 180.
LifeScore lists 175, and the working range of 170 to 200 spans both figures. None of them is a test result.

An estimate built from the historical record, not a recovered test score.
What supports it
- A secondary tabulation of Cox (1926) lists a corrected estimate of 200.
- His Oxford degree at about 15 is documented.
- State papers record his vast administrative workload.
What it cannot prove
- Cox rated people from biographies, not tests, and her old ratio-style scale runs higher than modern deviation IQ, by roughly 22 points in one tabulation.
- Records of his childhood are thin, so Cox's correction adds uncertainty.
- A ruler's record mixes personal ability with advisers, inherited power and circumstance.
