Jimmy Carter in brief
James Earl Carter was born in Plains, Georgia, in 1924. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1946 and served in Admiral Rickover's nuclear submarine programme, studying reactor technology. He returned to run the family peanut business, became governor of Georgia and won the presidency in 1976. He brokered the Camp David Accords but struggled with inflation and the Iran hostage crisis. After office he worked for health, democracy and Habitat for Humanity, winning the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize. He died in December 2024, aged 100.

How Carter thought
Carter reasoned like an engineer: master the details, solve the problem directly. At Camp David that patience produced a breakthrough over 13 days. In the White House the same instinct produced stories, which he disputed, that he even oversaw the tennis court schedule, a sign of how detail mastery can crowd out delegation.
