Ronald Reagan in brief
Ronald Reagan was born in Tampico, Illinois, in 1911 and studied economics and sociology at Eureka College. He worked as a radio sports announcer, then acted in more than 50 films and led the Screen Actors Guild. As a spokesman for General Electric he developed his conservative message. He served two terms as governor of California and was the 40th president from 1981 to 1989. He survived an assassination attempt in 1981 and signed a missile treaty with the Soviet Union. He died in 2004.
What was Ronald Reagan's IQ?
He was never tested. Simonton's 2006 study gives four versions for each president; Reagan's range from about 118 to 142, the II-C version, with an average of about 130. The spread is wide because experts disagree about how to rate his intellect.
Was Reagan smart?
Opponents often called him an amiable lightweight. Historians who studied his handwritten radio scripts, letters and diaries found a disciplined writer with clear, consistent ideas. His strengths were communication and conviction rather than detail.
Is the 2001 presidential IQ list real?
No. A widely circulated list from a "Lovenstein Institute" ranking Reagan and other presidents was a hoax; the institute does not exist. Simonton's 2006 study is the only serious attempt to estimate every president's IQ.

Reagan reasoned in stories and principles. He reduced complex issues to a few clear ideas and explained them through anecdotes. That style is easy to underrate but is a real cognitive skill: compressing complexity for an audience.
The evidence behind the estimate
An estimate built from the historical record, not a recovered test score.
What supports it
- Simonton (2006) gives Reagan 142 in version II-C, with lower versions near 118.
- His handwritten radio scripts were published in 2001.
- He graduated from Eureka College in economics and sociology.
What it cannot prove
- Simonton built most presidential figures statistically from expert ratings, so neighbouring presidents cannot really be told apart.
- His estimates vary more than most presidents', so the range matters more than the headline.
- Alzheimer's disease, diagnosed in 1994, has led to speculation about his second term that is unproven.
