Teller has no test score. 155 is an editorial marker for a theorist of real range whose public role was deeply controversial.

Edward Teller in brief

Edward Teller was born in Budapest in 1908 and trained in Germany, earning his doctorate under Werner Heisenberg. He left in 1933 and settled in the United States, where he worked on the Manhattan Project. He pushed hard for the hydrogen bomb, co-developed its design with Stanislaw Ulam and co-founded the Lawrence Livermore laboratory. His 1954 testimony against Oppenheimer divided the physics community. He died in 2003.

What was Edward Teller's IQ?

No test score exists. LifeScore lists about 155 as an editorial marker, range 140 to 170. It rests on work in molecular physics, the Jahn-Teller effect, nuclear physics and the hydrogen bomb design, not on his public reputation.

Why is Teller called the father of the hydrogen bomb?

He championed a thermonuclear weapon from 1942 onwards and, with mathematician Stanislaw Ulam, devised the 1951 design that made it work. The first full-scale test, Ivy Mike, took place in 1952. Teller disliked the title, and Ulam's key role is now recognised.

Why did Teller testify against Oppenheimer?

At Oppenheimer's 1954 security hearing Teller said he would feel more secure if public matters were in other hands. Oppenheimer lost his clearance, and many physicists never forgave Teller. Historians still debate his motives.

Was Teller the model for Dr. Strangelove?

He is often named as one of the inspirations, along with Wernher von Braun, Herman Kahn and others, but Stanley Kubrick never confirmed a single model. Teller's public support for the hydrogen bomb, nuclear testing and later the Strategic Defense Initiative made him a symbol of Cold War nuclear strategy, which is why the comparison stuck.

How smart was Edward Teller?

  1. 01

    Teller-Ulam design

The 1951 configuration behind thermonuclear weapons.
  2. 02

    Jahn-Teller effect

A 1937 result on the shapes of molecules, important in chemistry.
  3. 03

    BET theory

A method for measuring the surface area of materials, still used in labs.
  4. 04

    Lawrence Livermore

Co-founded the national laboratory in 1952.

How Teller thought

Teller was known for a flood of ideas, some brilliant and many wrong, and for physical intuition rather than careful calculation. Colleagues valued him as a generator of possibilities while others checked the details.

The evidence behind the estimate

An estimate built from the historical record, not a recovered test score.

What supports it

  • He earned his doctorate under Heisenberg at Leipzig.
  • His work in molecular and nuclear physics produced several effects and methods named after him.
  • He co-authored the design that made thermonuclear weapons feasible.

What it cannot prove

  • His public reputation is coloured by politics, which can distort assessments either way.
  • Ulam made the key breakthrough in the bomb design.
  • An editorial marker is a comparison aid built from achievement, not a measurement, and two careful readers could place it ten points apart.

How would you score?

Where would you land next to Edward Teller?

Edward Teller's 155 is an estimate from the historical record, with a working range of 140 to 170. On the standard IQ scale an IQ of 155 sits at the 99.99th percentile: about 1 in 8,137 people score that high. Nobody can test Teller now. You can find out where you sit on the same scale.

Psychological profile

Edward Teller's IQ is represented here by a retrospective estimate of 155, not a verified test result. Edward Teller is best known for exceptional physical intuition. The useful question is what the surviving evidence shows, not whether a precise modern score can be recovered.

Intense, persuasive and stubborn. A gifted pianist and theorist who became the most hawkish physicist of the Cold War.

The dominant archetype here is The Advocate. This archetype shapes decision patterns: what feels natural, what creates friction, and what blind spots tend to emerge.

Estimated IQ is 155. This is a rough estimate based on documented accomplishments and contemporary accounts, not a literal measurement.

Key traits

  1. Physical Intuition

He was one of the group of Hungarian scientists nicknamed "the Martians".
  2. Persistence

He lost part of his right foot in a Munich tram accident in 1928.
  3. Persuasion

The Teller-Ulam design of 1951 made the hydrogen bomb practical.

One thing most people do not know

He was a serious pianist and played Bach and Beethoven to relax.

Edward Teller: common questions

Was Edward Teller a genius?

Edward's record supports exceptional achievement, but "genius" is not established by an unverified IQ number. Their The Advocate archetype, combined with Physical Intuition and Persistence, is a more useful interpretation of their output.

What personality type was Edward Teller?

Edward fits the The Advocate archetype. Key traits include Physical Intuition, Persistence, and Persuasion. This profile helps explain both their strengths and their documented failure modes.

What can we learn from Edward Teller?

Edward's profile teaches that extreme strengths create extreme trade-offs. Their Physical Intuition and Persistence enabled success but also created recurring friction.
