12 CCAT-style questions to try

  1. Question 1 · Synonym

Which word is closest in meaning to CONCEAL?

    1. Astore
    2. Bhide
    3. Cprotect
    4. Ddestroy
    5. Eignore
    Show answer

B: hide. To conceal something is to hide it from view. Storing or protecting something does not necessarily keep it out of sight.

  2. Question 2 · Antonym

Which word is most nearly the opposite of THRIFTY?

    1. Apoor
    2. Bextravagant
    3. Ccareful
    4. Dgreedy
    5. Ewealthy
    Show answer

B: extravagant. A thrifty person spends carefully; an extravagant person spends lavishly. Wealthy describes how much money you have, not how you spend it.

  3. Question 3 · Analogy

Lock is to key as puzzle is to ?

    1. Apiece
    2. Bsolution
    3. Cbox
    4. Dproblem
    5. Egame
    Show answer

B: solution. A key opens a lock and a solution solves a puzzle (problem to what resolves it). A piece is only part of a puzzle.

  4. Question 4 · Sentence completion

To save money, the family made the ____ decision to cook at home instead of eating out.

    1. Aimpulsive
    2. Bprudent
    3. Ccareless
    4. Dreckless
    5. Elavish
    Show answer

B: prudent. Cooking at home to save money is a sensible, careful choice, which is what prudent means.

  5. Question 5 · Word problem

The same product is sold in five pack sizes (all prices are in the same currency). Which pack has the lowest price per item?

    1. A4 items for 16.00
    2. B8 items for 20.00
    3. C10 items for 30.00
    4. D6 items for 21.00
    5. E3 items for 13.50
    Show answer

B: 8 items for 20.00. Divide each price by the number of items. 8 items for 20.00 works out at 2.50 per item, cheaper than the next best, 10 items for 30.00, at 3.00 per item. The largest pack is not automatically the best value.

  6. Question 6 · Table

The table shows units sold in each region by quarter. By what percentage did West's figure change from Q1 to Q3?

    RegionQ1Q2Q3
    Central213130175
    South83230330
    West180230108
    North1169895
    1. A45% decrease
    2. B40% increase
    3. C40% decrease
    4. D72% increase
    5. E35% decrease
    Show answer

    C: 40% decrease. Fall: 180 − 108 = 72. Divide by the starting figure: 72 ÷ 180 = 0.4, so a 40% decrease.

  7. Question 7 · Number series

    What number comes next in the series? 5, 9, 17, 33, 65, ?

    1. A130
    2. B129
    3. C97
    4. D113
    5. E131
    Show answer

    B: 129. Each term is double the one before, minus 1: 65 × 2 − 1 = 129.

  8. Question 8 · Deduction

All quorns are cavs. All rivas are cavs. All rivas are quorns. If the first two statements are true, the third statement is:

    1. ATrue
    2. BFalse
    3. CUncertain
    Show answer

C: Uncertain. Both quorns and rivas are inside the cavs, but that says nothing about how they relate to each other. Picture a case where the only things are (1) quorns that are cavs but not rivas and (2) cavs that are rivas but not quorns. The first statements all hold, but the last one fails. Other cases make it true, so it is uncertain.

  9. Question 9 · Quick maths

    What is 1/6 + 1/5?

    1. A11/30
    2. B2/11
    3. C1/15
    4. D2/5
    5. E1/3
    Show answer

    A: 11/30. Use a common denominator of 30: 1/6 = 5/30 and 1/5 = 6/30. Add the tops: 11/30. Adding tops and bottoms separately (2/11) is the classic slip.

  10. Question 10 · Next in series

Which figure comes next in the series?

    1. A
    2. B
    3. C
    4. D
    5. E
    Show answer

    A. The shading repeats in the cycle solid → outline → half-shaded. So the next figure is an outline pentagon.

  11. Question 11 · Next in series

Which figure comes next in the series?

    1. A
    2. B
    3. C
    4. D
    5. E
    Show answer

    A. Two things change: the arrow turns 90° clockwise each step, and the shading repeats in the cycle solid → outline. So the next figure is a solid arrow pointing left.

  12. Question 12 · Odd one out

Which figure is the odd one out?

    1. A
    2. B
    3. C
    4. D
    5. E
    Show answer

    A. Four shapes are shaded at the top. The star is shaded on the right.
