Thirteen is when many people first take an IQ test: you start secondary school subjects that feel harder, friends share scores, and a class might touch on intelligence.
This page is for 13 year olds and for parents deciding whether it is a good idea. It is honest about what the number means at your age.
How this test works for a 13 year old
It is the same test as for adults, scored the same way for everyone, and it is not age-adjusted. You are not compared only with other 13 year olds. Reasoning keeps developing through the teens, so a 13 year old will often get fewer right than they will at 17.
- Take it alone, in one go, somewhere quiet. Help changes the result.
- The first puzzle in each set is the easiest and the last is hard. Most people miss some.
- Skip a stuck puzzle and come back. The 12-minute timer runs for the whole test.
What changes around 13
Between 12 and 16 the brain is still changing. In a 2011 study in Nature, researchers at University College London tested 33 teenagers at 12 to 16 and again about four years later. Some verbal and non-verbal scores moved by as much as 20 points, in both directions, and the changes matched changes in brain structure.
So a number at 13 is a snapshot. Many schools also ask students to choose subjects in Year 8 or 9 (England) or the equivalent, and it is tempting to use a score for that. School reports and teachers' advice are a far better guide.
What scores mean at 13
On a normed test such as the WISC-V, 100 is average for a 13 year old and about two thirds score between 85 and 115. The table shows what share of the age group each score beats. Our test is not age-normed, so read our result as a rough estimate on an adult-style scale.
