Fourteen is a common age to get curious about IQ. School starts sorting people into sets, exam options come up, and online IQ scores are everywhere.
Here is what a 14 year old should know before taking this test, and what the result can and cannot tell you.
How this test works for 14 year olds
The scoring is the same for everyone and is not age-adjusted. At 14 your reasoning is still developing, so expect to get fewer questions right than you will in a few years. A result here is best compared with your own future attempts, not with an adult's number.
The five question types each start easy and get harder. It is normal to find the last one or two in each set very tough.
What IQ scores mean at 14
On a normed test, a 14 year old is compared with other 14 year olds. The table shows what share of them each score beats. These are the standard figures for any IQ scale with an average of 100 and a standard deviation of 15.

Can a 14 year old's IQ change?
Yes, more than most people think. In a University College London study published in Nature in 2011, teenagers first tested between 12 and 16 were retested about four years later. Some moved up or down by as much as 20 points. The group average barely moved, but individuals did.
That is a good reason not to let one number at 14 decide what you think you can do.
Tests a 14 year old might meet at school
None of these give an IQ score, and nothing you score here is shared with a school.
- CAT4 (UK): many secondary schools use this reasoning test to set expectations. Its non-verbal and spatial sections look a lot like these puzzles.
- PSAT 8/9 (US): a College Board test for 8th and 9th graders, focused on reading, writing and maths rather than IQ.
IQ Test for 14 Year Olds: FAQ
Is 120 a good IQ for a 14 year old?+
Yes. On a normed test, 120 beats about 90.9% of 14 year olds, which is well above average.
Can a 14 year old join Mensa?+
In the UK, British Mensa's supervised test is open from age 10 and a half, so yes. American Mensa has no minimum age but needs a qualifying score from an approved test, often one given at school or by a psychologist. Online test results, including ours, are not accepted.
Why did I score lower than my older brother or sister?+
Probably age. Reasoning on timed puzzles keeps improving into the late teens, and this test scores everyone on one scale. Compare yourself at 14 with them at 14, not with them now.
