Scores are not age-normed, and this is not a clinical or diagnostic test.

By 17, reasoning on visual puzzles is close to adult level for most people, and psychologists would test you with an adult scale. You are also likely to be facing university or college applications.

That is why a 17 year old IQ test is a common search. The useful questions are what this one is, what an official one involves, and what the number does and does not predict.

How this test works for a 17 year old

You take the same 25 puzzles and 12-minute timer as every adult, and the score is not age-adjusted. At 17 that matters little, because your reasoning is near adult level on this type of puzzle. A younger teen is more affected.

  • Take it rested, not straight after a day of exams.
  • Use a laptop or tablet if you can. The diagrams are easier to read.
  • Do not search for answers. It only spoils the result for you.

Is there an official IQ test for a 17 year old?

Our test is not an official or clinical IQ test, and no online test is. An official IQ test is given one to one by a psychologist. At 17 that is normally the WAIS-IV or WAIS-5, which are normed for ages 16 to 90, and it takes an hour or more.

If you need a result for a school, college or medical reason, ask your school or a registered psychologist. If you want to try for a society, British Mensa runs supervised tests, and it does not accept online results.

What scores mean at 17

On a normed adult test, 100 is average and about two thirds of people score between 85 and 115. At 17 you are compared with other 17 year olds. The table shows what share each score beats. Our test reports an estimate on the same kind of scale but without an age comparison.

Computed from the normal curve (mean 100, standard deviation 15). Applies to properly normed tests.

IQ, the SAT and university

Reasoning ability and admissions tests overlap a lot. A study by Meredith Frey and Douglas Detterman found SAT scores correlate strongly with general ability measures. That does not make an online IQ score a stand-in for a SAT, an ACT or A-level grades, which also depend on what you have studied.

If you are a high school student comparing options, the IQ test for high school students covers how the SAT and IQ relate in more detail.

IQ Test for 17 Year Olds: FAQ

What is the average IQ for a 17 year old?

100, like every age, on a test normed by age. See the average IQ of a 17 year old for worked examples.

Is this an official or accurate IQ test for a 17 year old?

No. It is a short online reasoning test of 25 questions, not an official or clinical assessment. It gives a rough guide to how you handle timed visual puzzles.

Can a 17 year old take an adult IQ test?

Yes. The WAIS-IV and WAIS-5 are normed from age 16, and our test uses the same questions and timer for every age.

Will my score change at 18?

A little, possibly. Processing speed on timed puzzles tends to keep improving to about 18 or 19, so a retake a year later can feel easier.

What's your IQ?

Same test as the adults, same 12 minutes.
