Bluebook SAT practice tests: what they are and how to use them

Bluebook is College Board's testing app, and its full-length practice tests are the official, free, adaptive SAT practice tests, scored on the real 400 to 1600 scale. Since February 2025 it is reported to hold Practice Tests 4 to 10. They are the best way to get a scaled score, but there are only a few, so save them for checking progress and use other practice in between.

What is Bluebook?

Bluebook is the app you take the digital SAT, PSAT and AP exams in. You install it on a laptop or tablet, and it also holds College Board's full-length practice tests, which work exactly like test day.

A Bluebook practice test is adaptive, just like the real SAT: your first module in each section decides your second. After you finish, you see your scaled score in your College Board account, with your answers and explanations. That makes Bluebook tests the only free source of an SAT score on the real scale.

Bluebook also has the built-in Desmos calculator, the reference sheet, the annotation tool and the timer you will use on test day. Taking at least one practice test in Bluebook before the real thing removes every surprise about the interface.

How many Bluebook practice tests are there?

College Board does not give a count on the page we could read. A third-party report says that in February 2025, Practice Tests 1 to 3 were retired and Tests 7 to 10 added, leaving Tests 4 to 10. Open Bluebook to see the current list.

Seven tests sounds like a lot until you plan a few months of preparation: one to start, one every two or three weeks, and one the week before the test uses most of them. If you take them all early, you have nothing left to measure progress with at the end.

That is the gap our practice fills. You check your scaled score in Bluebook, and do the day-to-day work (finding your weak domains, drilling them, timing yourself) on SAT-style practice that does not use up an official test.

Practise between Bluebook tests

Eight SAT-style mocks and 32 domain drills, so every official test you take shows real progress.

The SAT Pass Pack gives you 8 full mocks on the real clock, 32 drills of 12 questions for the sections that cost you points, and a predictor that turns your mocks into the odds of reaching your target. One payment, no subscription, and your free score stays free.

Prep courses for these tests usually cost $19 to $129. The SAT Pass Pack is US$39 (£29), once.

How should I use Bluebook practice tests?

Take one at the start for a baseline, then one every two to three weeks to check progress, and one about a week before the real test. In between, drill your weakest domains and take shorter timed mocks.

  1. Day 1: take a Bluebook practice test for a baseline scaled score.
  2. Days 2 to 14: use our [SAT practice test](/sat-practice-test) and domain drills on your two weakest domains.
  3. Day 15: a second Bluebook test. Compare section scores with the baseline.
  4. Repeat the cycle with the next-weakest domains.
  5. One week before the real test: a final Bluebook test under exact test-day conditions.

Review every Bluebook test in your College Board account afterwards. The explanations there, plus a drill on the domain behind each miss, are worth more than the test itself.

How is your SAT practice different from Bluebook?

Bluebook tests are official and adaptive and give a scaled score; ours are SAT-style, not adaptive, and give domain scores instead. Ours exist so you can practise every day without spending an official test.

What device do I need for Bluebook?

A Windows or Mac laptop, an iPad, or a school-managed Chromebook that meets College Board's requirements. If you do not have one, College Board can lend you a device for test day when you request it ahead of time.

Install Bluebook on the device you will bring and run its readiness check well before test day; it tells you if the device or the app needs an update. Take at least one full practice test on that same device, so the screen size, keyboard and battery are what you are used to.

Battery matters: the test is over two hours plus check-in, and you may not get a seat near an outlet. Bring the device fully charged, and a charger if your test center allows it. If your device fails during the test, Bluebook saves your work, and staff will help you continue.

What should I know before taking a Bluebook practice test?

Take it in one sitting, on the device you will use on test day, with the real break and no notes. Treat it as the real test, or the score will not mean much.

  • Update Bluebook before you start; an old version may not open the newest tests.
  • Use the built-in Desmos calculator on Math so you know where it is fastest.
  • Mark questions you guess on, so your review covers lucky guesses as well as misses.
  • Do not pause and look things up: a score earned with help tells you nothing.
  • After the test, write down the domain of every miss. That list is your study plan.

Want more worked examples before your next Bluebook test? The SAT sample questions cover every domain step by step, and the SAT score calculator puts your Bluebook section scores against the benchmarks.

Frequently asked questions

Are Bluebook practice tests free?

Yes. They are free from College Board in the Bluebook app.

Are Bluebook practice tests accurate?

They are the most accurate practice available: official, adaptive, and scored on the real scale.

Can I retake a Bluebook practice test?

You can, but a second attempt at the same questions overstates your score. Treat each test as a one-time measurement.

Is your practice test a Bluebook test?

No. Ours is an SAT-style practice test with original questions, not an official College Board test. LifeScore is not affiliated with College Board.

Do I need Bluebook for the real SAT?

Yes. The digital SAT is taken in Bluebook, so install it and take at least one practice test there first.
