HiSET math practice test: a free timed drill and what the subtest asks
HiSET Mathematics is 55 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, about 98 seconds each: roughly 45% algebra, 19% numbers and operations, 18% measurement and geometry and 18% data and probability. It is calculator-neutral, and some formulas, such as the Pythagorean theorem and distance = rate × time, are not on the formula sheet. You need at least 8 of 20 to pass the subtest. What is on the HiSET Mathematics test?
55 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes. A calculator is allowed but no question needs one. A formula sheet is provided, but not every formula you need is on it.

What does each part of HiSET math ask?
Four content categories: algebraic concepts (about 45%), numbers and operations (19%), measurement and geometry (18%), and data, probability and statistics (18%).
The HiSET weights algebra most heavily, but almost half of the subtest is arithmetic, geometry and data. Word problems are common throughout.
Algebraic concepts
about 45%
Linear equations and inequalities, expressions, functions, slope and lines, systems in word problems and simple quadratics.
Trap: flipping the inequality sign at the wrong time.
Numbers and operations
about 19%
Fractions, decimals, percents, ratios and rates, scientific notation, roots and order of operations.
Trap: adding denominators.
Measurement and geometry
about 18%
Perimeter, area and volume, circles, the Pythagorean theorem and scale.
Trap: the Pythagorean theorem is not on the sheet: learn it.
Data, probability and statistics
about 18%
Mean, median, range, reading tables and graphs, and simple probability.
Trap: the median of an unsorted list.
What do HiSET math questions look like?
Word problems and direct calculations with four options. Set up the equation before you calculate.
HiSET-style question 1 · Linear functions
Jade had some savings and adds the same amount every week. The table shows her savings. If the pattern continues, what will her savings be after 15 weeks?
Weeks Savings ($) 0 50 2 65 4 80 6 95 - A$750
- B$170
- C$112.50
- D$162.50
Worked answer
D: $162.50. The value goes up 15 every 2 weeks, so the rate is 7.5 per week and the starting value is 50. y = 7.5x + 50, so after 15: 7.5 × 15 + 50 = 162.5.
HiSET-style question 2 · Discount and tax
A jacket usually costs $96. It is on sale for 30% off, and 10% sales tax is added to the sale price. What is the total cost?
- A$67.20
- B$77.20
- C$73.92
- D$75.60
Worked answer
C: $73.92. Take the discount first: $96 × 0.7 = $67.20. Then add the tax: $67.20 × 1.1 = $73.92.
HiSET-style question 3 · Circumference
A circular patio has a diameter of 12 feet. What is its circumference? Use 3.14 for π. (C = 2πr, or πd)
- A75.36 ft
- B37.68 ft
- C113.04 ft
- D18.84 ft
Show the answer
B: 37.68 ft. The radius is half the diameter: 6 ft. C = 2πr = 2 × 3.14 × 6 = 37.68 feet.
HiSET-style question 4 · Mean
A student's scores on 5 quizzes were 97, 96, 62, 97, 98. What is the mean (average) score?
- A112.5
- B90
- C92
- D36
Show the answer
B: 90. Add the scores and divide by how many there are: 97 + 96 + 62 + 97 + 98 = 450, and 450 ÷ 5 = 90.
These come from our public sample set, so none of them appears in the drills or the paid tests. More, for every subject, are in HiSET-style practice questions.

Which formulas do I need for HiSET math?
The HiSET formula sheet covers most area and volume formulas, but the program's own materials note that some formulas, such as the Pythagorean theorem and distance = rate × time, are not provided.
| Formula | Use it for |
|---|---|
| a² + b² = c² | Right triangles |
| d = rt | Distance, rate and time |
| Change ÷ original × 100 | Percent change |
| Sum ÷ count | Mean |
| (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁) | Slope |
| Favorable ÷ total | Probability |
| I = Prt | Simple interest |
How should I pace HiSET math?
About 98 seconds a question. Bank time on direct calculations to give multi-step word problems two or three minutes.
| Mark | Number | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Real time limit | 90 min | For 55 multiple choice questions |
| Even pace | 98 s | A question, if you spread the clock evenly |
| Halfway check | 45 min | Be near question 28 |
| Our free drill | 12 in 19:36 | The same seconds per question as our full practice test |
Our rule: if a question has not set up after two reads, flag it and move on. Check answers by substitution, which takes seconds and catches sign errors.
What traps cost the most points on HiSET math?
The usual slips: signs, the wrong base for a percent and formulas that are not on the sheet.
- Dividing a percent change by the new value.
- Forgetting to flip an inequality after dividing by a negative.
- Using the diameter instead of the radius.
- Not sorting a list before finding the median.
- Assuming the Pythagorean theorem will be on the formula sheet.
How should I study for HiSET math?
Seven days, 30 to 45 minutes each, algebra first because it carries the most weight. This is our plan.
Day 1
30 min
Take the free drill and note the categories you missed.
Day 2
45 min
Linear equations and inequalities.
Day 3
40 min
Functions, slope and word problems into equations.
Day 4
35 min
Fractions, percents, ratios and scientific notation.
Day 5
35 min
Geometry: area, volume, circles and the Pythagorean theorem.
Day 6
30 min
Data and probability.
Day 7
45 min
A timed set of mixed questions, then review every miss.
How does math fit the whole HiSET?
Math is one of five HiSET subtests. It needs at least 8 of 20, and every point above that helps reach the 45 total.
Because the five subtests must total 45, a strong math score can give you room on a weaker subtest, as long as every subtest reaches 8. See the HiSET practice test to measure all five.
