How to pass the AFOQT: a two-week plan by composite

Find out which composites your target job uses, take a full practice test to see which subtests are weakest, and spend two weeks on those first. The AFOQT is as much about speed as knowledge, so practise the short subtests (Word Knowledge, Table Reading, Instrument Comprehension, Block Counting) on their real clocks until the pace feels normal, and answer every question, because a blank is always wrong.

What does "passing" the AFOQT mean?

There is no pass mark. You need to meet the minimum percentiles for your program and job, and then score high enough to be competitive with other applicants.

Minimums as published by AFROTC detachments
TrackMinimum percentiles
Any officer commissionVerbal 15 and Quantitative 10
PilotPilot 25, with Verbal 15, Quantitative 10 and Pilot + CSO of at least 50
Combat Systems OfficerCSO 25, with Verbal 15, Quantitative 10 and Pilot + CSO of at least 50
Air Battle ManagerPilot + CSO of at least 50, with Verbal 15 and Quantitative 10

If you want a non-rated job, focus on Verbal and Quantitative. If you want pilot or CSO, add the rated subtests. The AFOQT scores page explains each composite.

Why does speed matter so much on the AFOQT?

Several subtests give you under 15 seconds an item, and running out of time is the most common way to lose points. Practising on the real clocks fixes it faster than anything else.

What is a good two-week AFOQT study plan?

Week 1 builds the basics (vocabulary, math rules, science formulas, aviation facts); week 2 is timed practice and a second full mock. About 45 to 60 minutes a day.

  1. Day 1: take the full [AFOQT practice test](/afoqt-practice-test) on the real clocks. List your three weakest subtests.
  2. Days 2-3: math rules card and the [math drills](/afoqt-math-practice-test); 10 minutes of vocabulary daily from now on.
  3. Days 4-5: analogies and reading on the [verbal page](/afoqt-verbal-practice-test); science formulas from the [Physical Science page](/afoqt-physical-science-practice-test).
  4. Days 6-7: aviation basics from the [Aviation Information page](/afoqt-aviation-information-practice-test); if rated, Instrument Comprehension and Block Counting from the official pamphlet.
  5. Days 8-10: one timed drill a day on each of your three weakest subtests, plus a 5-minute [Table Reading](/afoqt-table-reading-practice-test) set.
  6. Days 11-12: a second full mock. Compare subtest by subtest with day 1.
  7. Days 13-14: review every miss, light practice only, sleep. Confirm your test center, ID and voucher.

Follow the plan with the right questions

Eight full AFOQT-style mocks and four drills for each subtest, every answer explained.

The AFOQT Pass Pack gives you 8 full mocks on the real clock, 32 drills of 12 questions for the sections that cost you points, and a predictor that turns your mocks into the odds of reaching your target. One payment, no subscription, and your free score stays free.

Prep courses for these tests usually cost $19 to $129. The AFOQT Pass Pack is US$39 (£29), once.

How do I prepare for the subtests practice tests do not cover?

Use the official pamphlet's examples for Instrument Comprehension and Block Counting, and read Situational Judgment items as "what would an effective officer do". The Self-Description Inventory needs no preparation: answer honestly.

  • Instrument Comprehension: learn to read the attitude indicator (bank and pitch) and the compass, then match them to the aircraft pictures. Practise with the pamphlet's examples until each takes about 12 seconds.
  • Block Counting: count the blocks a given block touches on every face, including the ones hidden below. Draw a few stacks yourself to build the habit.
  • Situational Judgment: pick responses that are honest, respectful, take ownership and solve the problem at the lowest sensible level.
  • Self-Description Inventory: a personality inventory with no right answers; it is not part of the composites.

Can I try a few AFOQT questions now?

Yes. Each of these three has a trap that costs points under time pressure; try them before you open the working.

  1. AFOQT-style question 1 · Unit and part (pairs)

    HOUR is to MINUTE as

    1. Aday is to week
    2. Bminute is to second
    3. Csecond is to minute
    4. Dmonth is to year
    5. Eclock is to time
    Worked answer

B: minute is to second. An hour is made of 60 minutes; a minute is made of 60 seconds. Same order (larger unit, then the unit it splits into) and the same relationship.

    1. Sentence: "An hour splits into minutes."
    2. Keep the order: the larger unit first.
    3. "A minute splits into seconds" fits; "second is to minute" is the right words in the wrong order.

The trap: Choosing "second is to minute": the right pair of words, but reversed. Order matters in analogy pairs.

  2. AFOQT-style question 2 · Linear equation

    If 3(x − 4) = 2x + 5, what is x?

    1. A1
    2. B9
    3. C17
    4. D−7
    5. E7
    Show the worked answer

    C: 17. Expand: 3x − 12 = 2x + 5. Subtract 2x: x − 12 = 5. Add 12: x = 17.

    1. Distribute: 3x − 12 = 2x + 5.
    2. Subtract 2x from both sides: x − 12 = 5.
    3. Add 12: x = 17. Check: 3 × 13 = 39 and 2 × 17 + 5 = 39.

The trap: Distributing only to x (3x − 4) gives x = 9. Multiply every term inside the brackets.

  3. AFOQT-style question 3 · Runways

One end of a runway is numbered 09. What number is painted on the other end?

    1. A09
    2. B18
    3. C27
    4. D90
    5. E36
    Show the worked answer

C: 27. Runway 09 points about 090° magnetic. The other end points the opposite way, 090 + 180 = 270°, so it is runway 27.

    1. 09 means a heading of about 090°.
    2. The reciprocal heading: 090 + 180 = 270°.
    3. Drop the last zero: 27.

The trap: Adding 18 to the number (09 + 18 = 27) works, but adding 9 or doubling does not. Think in degrees: add or subtract 180.

More worked examples are on AFOQT sample questions.

What mistakes cost people the most AFOQT points?

Running out of time on the short subtests, leaving blanks, studying only the subtests they already like, and cramming instead of practising on the clock.

The commonest story is a candidate who knows the material but has never sat Word Knowledge or Table Reading on its real clock, and leaves a third of the items blank. A week of timed drills fixes that more surely than any amount of reading.

The second is uneven preparation. People drill the subtests they enjoy and avoid the ones that feel hard, but each composite adds several subtests together, so the weakest one sets the ceiling. Your practice result names it; start there.

What should I do on AFOQT test day?

Arrive early with your ID and voucher details, eat beforehand, use every break, and answer every question before each clock runs out.

  • The test is about five hours. Eat a proper meal before and bring water if the center allows it at breaks.
  • Each subtest has its own clock; time you save on one does not carry over.
  • There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so fill in every item.
  • Do not dwell on a subtest that went badly. The next one is scored separately.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I study for the AFOQT?

Two to four weeks of 45 to 60 minutes a day suits most people. Start vocabulary earlier if you can.

Is the AFOQT harder than the ASVAB?

It is longer, faster on several subtests and adds aviation and spatial items, so most people find it harder.

Can I guess on the AFOQT?

Yes. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so answer every item.

What should I study first?

The subtests in the composites your target job uses, starting with your weakest one on a full practice test.
