How our ASVAB practice test estimates your AFQT
The AFQT decides whether you can enlist, and it comes from four ASVAB subtests. Our practice test covers exactly those four. Here is how we write the questions, how we turn your score into an estimated AFQT, and why a recruiter has the final word.

What it is, and what it is not
What it is
- Practice on the four subtests that make up the AFQT, in the order of the paper test
- An estimated AFQT percentile and the branch minimums it would clear
- A way to find which subtest costs you the most points
What it is not
- The official ASVAB, or connected to the Department of Defense
- Your real AFQT: only the official test produces that
- Coverage of the other ASVAB subtests that decide job placement
How the questions are made and checked
| Question type | Per test | How it is made |
|---|---|---|
| Arithmetic Reasoning | 16 | Generated, answer computed |
| Word Knowledge | 14 | Hand-written (bank of 90) |
| Paragraph Comprehension | 6 | Hand-written (bank of 38) |
| Mathematics Knowledge | 14 | Generated, answer computed |
Hand-written questions are drafted with the help of AI writing tools and edited by us. Each one carries a single keyed answer and a written explanation of the rule, which you see in the answer review. Automated checks confirm that every key points to a real option and that no question offers the same option twice.
Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge questions are generated, with the answer calculated by the code. Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension are hand-written.
Each practice test is 50 questions, ordered from easy to hard. The same test always has the same questions. Hand-written questions are dealt out so that no hand-written question appears in two different full practice tests.
Found a question with two right answers, or a wrong key? Tell us and we will fix it and log the fix in the change log.
How your score is estimated
The real AFQT is a percentile against a national sample, worked out by the Department of Defense from its own conversion tables for each test form. Those tables are not public in a form anyone can reproduce.
So we make one explicit assumption and show it: a practice score of 29 out of 50 (58%) is set at the national middle, AFQT 50, and the curve is shaped around it. Your estimated AFQT is that curve read at your score.[1]
| Right answers | Estimated AFQT | Ahead of |
|---|---|---|
| 10 of 50 | AFQT 3 (Category V) | 3% |
| 15 of 50 | AFQT 8 (Category V) | 8% |
| 20 of 50 | AFQT 17 (Category IVB) | 17% |
| 25 of 50 | AFQT 33 (Category IIIB) | 33% |
| 30 of 50 | AFQT 55 (Category IIIA) | 55% |
| 35 of 50 | AFQT 76 (Category II) | 76% |
| 40 of 50 | AFQT 91 (Category II) | 91% |
| 45 of 50 | AFQT 98 (Category I) | 98% |
| 50 of 50 | AFQT 99 (Category I) | 99%+ |
What the estimate assumes
- Middle of the curve
- 29 of 50 right = AFQT 50 (our assumption)
- Shape of the curve
- Set by hand through points such as 20 right = AFQT 17 and 41 right = AFQT 93
- Our questions vs the real ones
- Assumed equally hard on average. Not tested against real AFQT results
- Branch minimums
- As commonly reported by recruiting guides; services change them
Limits worth knowing
- The estimate rests on an assumption about where the middle sits. Use it to track progress and find weak subtests, not to decide whether to book the real test.
- Branch minimums change and differ by education level. Confirm the current figure with a recruiter.
- The real AFQT weights verbal skills double (Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension together count twice). Our AFQT calculator applies that weighting; the practice test estimate uses your total right out of 50, where verbal questions are 20 of the 50.
