What is on the ASE A8 Engine Performance test?

General engine diagnosis; ignition system; fuel, air induction and exhaust; emission control; computerized engine controls and OBD II. The real test is 60 questions (50 scored) in 75 minutes.

The A8 content areas and what the questions ask
AreaWhat the questions ask
General engine diagnosisMisfires, rough idle, hesitation, and the mechanical tests that rule an engine in or out
Ignition systemCoils, plugs and wires, crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, and ignition waveforms
Fuel, air induction and exhaustFuel pressure and volume, injectors, mass airflow and manifold pressure sensors, throttle bodies, vacuum leaks and exhaust restriction
Emission controlEGR, EVAP, PCV, secondary air and catalytic converters, and their codes
Computerized engine controlsScan data, fuel trims, oxygen and air-fuel ratio sensors, OBD II monitors, codes and freeze frame

A8 is about reading data and choosing the next test. Most questions give a symptom with a code, a scan reading or a sensor voltage, and ask what it means or what to check first. The right answer is usually the test that confirms the fault before a part is replaced.

Generic OBD II codes help: P0300 is a random misfire and P0301 to P0308 name the cylinder; P0171 and P0174 are lean on bank 1 and bank 2; P0420 is catalyst efficiency on bank 1.

Which A8 scan data rules do I need to know?

Fuel trims, oxygen sensor behaviour, the common generic codes, and what each sensor reads in a healthy engine.

  • Fuel trim: add short-term and long-term. Positive means the PCM is adding fuel for a lean condition; negative means it is removing fuel for a rich one. About ±10% total is a typical healthy range.
  • Lean at idle that improves at higher rpm points to a vacuum leak; lean that gets worse under load points to fuel delivery.
  • Narrowband oxygen sensor: switches across about 0.45 V in closed loop; stuck high is rich, stuck low is lean. A downstream sensor that switches like the upstream one suggests a weak catalyst.
  • Injector duty cycle: on time ÷ cycle time; a sequential injector fires once every two crankshaft turns.
  • Fuel pressure: compare with the specification. Low pressure points to the pump, filter or regulator; high to a restricted return or regulator.

Freeze frame data records the conditions when a code set: use it to recreate the fault on a road test.

The formulas our A8 questions use
RuleHow it works
Total fuel trimShort-term + long-term; positive means the PCM is adding fuel for a lean condition
Injector duty cyclePulse width ÷ time for two crankshaft turns (120,000 ÷ rpm, in ms), sequential injection

What do ASE A8 questions look like?

Short shop situations with four options: a reading, a measurement against a limit or a symptom to match to its cause. Try it before you open the working below.

  1. ASE-style question 1 · Fuel trims

At idle, short-term fuel trim is +4% and long-term is +18%. At 2,500 rpm both trims are near 0%. What is the most likely cause?

    1. AA vacuum leak
    2. BA weak fuel pump
    3. CA leaking fuel injector
    4. DA restricted exhaust
    Worked answer

A: A vacuum leak. Total trim at idle is +22%: the PCM is adding a lot of fuel for a lean condition. A vacuum leak lets in a fixed amount of unmetered air, which is a big share of the airflow at idle and a small share at 2,500 rpm, so the trims come back toward zero as rpm rises. A weak pump gets worse with load.

    1. Idle total: +4 + 18 = +22%, lean.
    2. The lean condition fades at higher rpm.
    3. Unmetered air at idle: a vacuum leak.

The trap: Picking the weak fuel pump. A fuel delivery problem is worst under load, not at idle.

  2. ASE-style question 2 · Fuel

A sequential port injector has a 5 ms pulse width at 2,400 rpm. About what is its duty cycle?

    1. A10%
    2. B20%
    3. C5%
    4. D12%
    Show the worked answer

    A: 10%. A sequential injector fires once every two crankshaft turns. Two turns at 2,400 rpm take 120,000 ÷ 2,400 = 50 ms. Duty cycle = 5 ÷ 50 = 10%.

    1. Time for two turns: 120,000 ÷ 2,400 = 50 ms.
    2. Duty cycle = on time ÷ cycle time.
    3. 5 ÷ 50 = 10%.

The trap: Using one turn (25 ms) and getting 20%. A sequential injector fires once per engine cycle, which is two turns.

How do I answer "Technician A says, Technician B says" questions on the ASE A8 test?

Judge each technician's statement on its own, as true or false, before you look at the four options. Then the answer is mechanical: only A true, only B, both or neither.

  1. Read the situation once and note the symptom or the reading.
  2. Cover B. Is A's statement true for this situation? Write T or F.
  3. Cover A. Is B's statement true? Write T or F.
  4. Pick the option that matches: T and F is "A only", F and T is "B only", T and T is "Both", F and F is "Neither".

The trap is letting one statement colour the other. Two technicians can both be right about different causes, and a statement can be true in general but wrong for the situation in the question. Words like "always", "only" and "proves" usually make a statement false, because diagnosis rarely works that way.

"Neither" is a real answer, not a trick. On our tests the four keys come up about equally often, so do not avoid one because you picked it last time.

  1. ASE-style question 1 · Sensors

On a warm engine, the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors on bank 1 switch at the same rate and with the same voltage swing, and P0420 is set. Technician A says the catalytic converter is not storing oxygen well. Technician B says the upstream sensor must be replaced first. Who is right?

    1. AA only
    2. BB only
    3. CBoth A and B
    4. DNeither A nor B
    Worked answer

A: A only. A working catalyst stores oxygen, so the downstream sensor reads fairly steady while the upstream one switches. When the downstream copies the upstream, the catalyst is not doing its job, which is what P0420 reports. A switching upstream sensor is working, so replacing it is not the fix.

    1. A good catalyst steadies the downstream signal.
    2. Here the downstream copies the upstream.
    3. So the catalyst is weak: A is right, B is not.

The trap: Replacing the upstream sensor because a code mentions oxygen. A sensor that switches normally is working.

Where do people lose points on the ASE A8 test?

On rules they half-remember and on statements that are true in general but wrong for the situation. These are the ones our explanations correct most often.

  • Reading positive fuel trim as rich. Positive trim means the PCM is adding fuel because the engine is lean.
  • Replacing an oxygen sensor for a lean code. The sensor is usually reporting a real lean condition.
  • Counting one revolution for a sequential injector. It fires once every two turns.
  • Ignoring freeze frame data. It tells you the speed, load and temperature when the fault happened.
  • Treating a code as a part to replace. A code names a circuit or system; testing finds the cause.
