ASE certification tests: format, cost and how certification works
ASE certification is earned one test at a time. Each Automobile test (A1 to A9) is a computer-based exam of 40 to 50 scored questions plus 10 unscored ones, taken at a Prometric center. ASE publishes no fixed passing percentage. Pass a test and show 2 years of hands-on experience and you are certified in that area for 5 years; pass A1 to A8 and you are a Master Automobile Technician.

What is ASE certification?
A credential from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence showing a technician has passed ASE's test in a system and has the work experience behind it. Shops, dealers and fleets use it to hire, to set pay and to show customers their technicians are qualified.
ASE is an independent non-profit. It does not train technicians; it tests them. Certification is voluntary, but many employers ask for it, and the blue-and-white ASE patch or the sign in a shop window tells customers the work is done by tested people.
Each certification covers one system. A technician who works on brakes and suspension might hold A4 and A5; one who diagnoses drivability problems will want A6 and A8. There are separate series for collision repair, medium and heavy trucks, school buses, transit buses, parts specialists and more. This guide is about the Automobile and Light Truck series, the A tests.
What are the ASE A-series tests?
Nine tests, A1 to A9: Engine Repair, Automatic Transmission, Manual Drive Train and Axles, Suspension and Steering, Brakes, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating and Air Conditioning, Engine Performance, and Light Vehicle Diesel Engines. Our practice covers the five most booked: A1, A4, A5, A6 and A8.
| Test | Real questions | Real time | Our mock |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 Engine Repair | 55 (45 scored) | 75 minutes | 20 in 27 minutes |
| A4 Suspension and Steering | 50 (40 scored) | 60 minutes | 20 in 24 minutes |
| A5 Brakes | 55 (45 scored) | 75 minutes | 20 in 27 minutes |
| A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems | 60 (50 scored) | 90 minutes | 20 in 30 minutes |
| A8 Engine Performance | 60 (50 scored) | 75 minutes | 20 in 25 minutes |
| Test | Content areas |
|---|---|
| A1 Engine Repair | General engine diagnosis; cylinder head and valve train; engine block; lubrication and cooling systems; fuel, electrical, ignition and exhaust checks an engine repair needs |
| A4 Suspension and Steering | Steering systems (columns, gears, power steering, linkage, electric steering); suspension systems; wheel alignment diagnosis and adjustment; wheels and tires |
| A5 Brakes | Hydraulic system; drum brakes; disc brakes; power assist; parking brakes, wheel bearings and electrical; ABS and electronic brake control |
| A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems | General electrical diagnosis; battery; starting and charging systems; lighting; gauges and driver information; horn, wiper and accessories; body electronics and networks |
| A8 Engine Performance | General engine diagnosis; ignition system; fuel, air induction and exhaust; emission control; computerized engine controls and OBD II |

What is the ASE test format?
Multiple choice with four options, on a computer, one test per sitting or several booked together. Every test carries 10 unscored research questions that look exactly like the scored ones.

Questions come in a few shapes. Direct questions ask for a cause, a test or a part. "Technician A says, Technician B says" questions give a situation and two statements, and you decide whether A, B, both or neither is right. "EXCEPT" questions list three things that are true and ask for the one that is not. "Most likely" questions give a symptom and several possible causes, of which one fits best.
Some questions show a figure, a wiring diagram or a scan tool reading. Bring nothing: the test center provides what you are allowed to use.
How are ASE tests scored?
Each test is pass or fail against a standard a panel of technicians and experts sets for that test. ASE does not publish the standard as a percentage, and the research questions do not count.
Your score report shows pass or fail and how you did in each content area, so a failed test still tells you where to study. Prep sites often quote a percentage such as "about 65% to 70%"; that is an estimate, not an ASE number. We use 70% on each test as a practice target, which gives you some margin over any such estimate.
Detail on the scoring, the score report and what to do after a fail is on ASE passing score.
How much do ASE tests cost?
A $34 registration fee each time you register, plus a fee for each test. 2026 guides quote about $62 for a standard test, so one test costs about $96 and each extra test in the same registration adds the test fee only. Check the current fees at ase.com before you book.
Because the registration fee is paid per registration, booking two or three tests at once costs less than booking them one by one. A failed test is paid for again in full, so the cheapest test is the one you pass first time. Some employers and schools pay test fees; ask before you pay yourself.
Do you need experience to take an ASE test?
No, you can take the tests first. To become certified you then need 2 years of hands-on work experience; a two-year automotive degree or similar training can stand in for one of those years, according to the guides we checked.
Many students take the tests while still in school and become certified once their experience is in. ASE also runs entry-level student tests, which are separate from the certification tests on this page.
Certification lasts 5 years. To keep it you take a recertification test (or ASE's online renewal option where it is offered) before it lapses. Passing A1 to A8 makes you a Master Automobile Technician.
How should I prepare for an ASE test?
Read ASE's free study guide for the test's task list, take a full timed practice test to find your weak areas, drill them, and take a second mock before you book.
| Rule | How it works |
|---|---|
| Displacement | 0.7854 × bore² × stroke × number of cylinders (cubic inches); × 16.387 for cc |
| Compression ratio | (swept volume + clearance volume) ÷ clearance volume |
| Cylinder taper | Diameter at the top of ring travel − diameter at the bottom |
| Oil clearance | Bearing inside diameter − journal diameter (or read with Plastigage) |
| Total toe | Left toe + right toe; a car drifts toward more positive camber and less positive caster |
| Hydraulic pressure | Pressure = force ÷ area; output force = pressure × piston area |
| Rotor thickness variation | Thickest reading − thinnest reading around the rotor |
| Ohm's law | E = I × R; series resistances add; two in parallel give R1 × R2 ÷ (R1 + R2) |
| Battery load test | Half the CCA rating for 15 seconds; at least 9.6 V at about 70°F |
| Total fuel trim | Short-term + long-term; positive means the PCM is adding fuel for a lean condition |
| Injector duty cycle | Pulse width ÷ time for two crankshaft turns (120,000 ÷ rpm, in ms), sequential injection |
Most experienced technicians need one to three weeks per test, mostly on areas they do not work on every day and on the two-technician format. A seven-day plan is in how to pass the ASE test, and the free ASE practice test shows where you stand today.
