How we ranked them

Each estimate follows the same five-part test: abstract reasoning, planning under uncertainty, learning speed and breadth, invention, and how often the character is outplayed. Being told that a character is a genius earns nothing, and repeated mistakes cost points.

A universe of self-declared geniuses, where the title is handed out far more freely than the evidence supports. Ranking the cast together makes the trade-offs visible, because the same story gives every character the same chances to prove themselves. The rules are on the method page.

Why each one sits where it does

  1. Marvel

Reed Richards' IQ is about 175 (range 165 to 185): the widest scientific range in Marvel, offset by errors of judgement that would sink a smaller reputation.
  2. Marvel Comics

Doctor Doom's IQ is about 170 (range 155 to 185). He combines advanced engineering with sorcery and rule over a nation, though his pride and his fixation on Reed Richards lead to repeated defeats.
  3. Marvel Cinematic Universe

Bruce Banner's IQ is best estimated at about 165 (range 155 to 175): a world-class gamma physicist whose on-screen work is mostly supporting, with one costly lapse in Age of Ultron.
  4. Marvel Cinematic Universe

Shuri's IQ is about 160 (range 146 to 172), norming her as a teenager. She runs Wakanda's technology design, heals a serious injury and designs the Black Panther suit, which makes her a top inventor in the MCU.
  5. Marvel Cinematic Universe

Tony Stark's IQ is estimated at about 160 (range 148 to 170): real engineering feats under pressure, from a cave-built suit to time travel, held back by reckless calls like Ultron.
  6. Marvel Cinematic Universe

Doctor Strange's IQ is about 145 (range 135 to 158). The films show a surgeon with a photographic memory, fast learning and a clever answer to Dormammu, but not the genius of Tony Stark or Reed Richards.

Smartest Marvel characters, ranked: common questions

Who is the smartest Marvel character?

On our evidence, Reed Richards at about 175, ahead of Doctor Doom at 170. The order depends on what you weigh, so each profile lays out the scenes and the mistakes behind its number.

How do you estimate a Marvel character's IQ?

We score what the character does on screen: deduction, planning, learning speed, invention and how often they are outplayed. We then map that to an IQ band with a range and a confidence level. It is fan analysis, not a measurement.

Are these the official Marvel IQs?

No. The story does not state IQs for these characters, so every figure is our own estimate with a range.

Why do the estimates differ from fan claims?

Fan numbers usually reward how impressive a character seems and ignore their mistakes. Ours count being outplayed as evidence, which pulls most numbers down.
