12 TEAS-style questions to try
Question 1 · Reading
After reviewing the scan, the physician told Mr. Alvarez that the lump in his thigh was benign. She explained that benign growths do not spread to other parts of the body and are usually not dangerous, although she still recommended a follow-up scan in six months to make sure the lump had not changed in size or shape. As used in the passage, the word "benign" most nearly means
- Atoo small to see
- Bpainful and growing
- Calready removed
- Dlikely to spread
- Enot cancerous or harmful
Show answer
E: not cancerous or harmful. The physician defines benign growths as ones that do not spread and are usually not dangerous. "Likely to spread" is the opposite of what the passage says.
Question 2 · Reading
The unit manager noticed that medication errors tended to occur during shift change, when nurses were interrupted by questions while preparing doses. She introduced brightly colored vests for nurses preparing medications, signaling that they should not be interrupted. Within three months, reported errors during those hours fell by nearly half. Which conclusion is best supported by the passage?
- AThe color of the vests caused the errors
- BMedication errors no longer occur on the unit
- CShift changes were removed from the schedule
- DThe vests changed how nurses were trained
- ELimiting interruptions likely helped reduce medication errors
Show answer
E: Limiting interruptions likely helped reduce medication errors. Errors fell by nearly half after the do-not-interrupt vests were introduced, which supports the idea that fewer interruptions helped. The passage says errors fell, not that they disappeared.
Question 3 · Reading
Antibiotics kill bacteria, but they have no effect on viruses such as those that cause colds and influenza. Each unnecessary course of antibiotics gives surviving bacteria a chance to adapt, and resistant strains can then spread to others. For this reason, clinicians now prescribe antibiotics only when a bacterial infection is likely. Which conclusion is best supported by the passage?
- AAn antibiotic given for a cold would bring no benefit and could encourage resistance
- BResistant bacteria are found only in hospitals
- CClinicians no longer prescribe antibiotics for any illness
- DAntibiotics make viruses spread more easily
- EColds are caused by bacteria that adapt quickly
Show answer
A: An antibiotic given for a cold would bring no benefit and could encourage resistance. Colds are viral, so antibiotics do nothing against them, and unnecessary use promotes resistance. The passage says antibiotics are still prescribed when a bacterial infection is likely.
Question 4 · Ratio
A unit has nurses and aides in the ratio 6 to 7. If there are 78 staff in all, how many are nurses?
- A42
- B13
- C36
- D72
- E12
Show answer
C: 36. There are 6 + 7 = 13 equal parts, each worth 78 ÷ 13 = 6. Nurses are 6 parts: 6 × 6 = 36.
Question 5 · Algebra
Solve for x: 2x + 9 = 13
- A3
- B2
- C4
- D2.5
- E8
Show answer
B: 2. Subtract 9: 2x = 4. Divide by 2: x = 2.
Question 6 · Algebra
A lab charges a flat $12 fee plus $3 per sample. The total bill was $21. How many samples were submitted?
- A3
- B4
- C11
- D2.5
- E7
Show answer
A: 3. Let n be the number of samples: 3n + 12 = 21. Subtract 12: 3n = 9. Divide by 3: n = 3.
Question 7 · Anatomy
Deoxygenated blood returning from the body through the venae cavae first enters which part of the heart?
- ARight ventricle
- BRight atrium
- CLeft atrium
- DAorta
- ELeft ventricle
Show answer
B: Right atrium. The superior and inferior venae cavae empty into the right atrium, which then fills the right ventricle.
Question 8 · Chemistry
Sodium (Na) transfers one electron to chlorine (Cl) to form NaCl. What type of bond holds this compound together?
- APolar covalent bond
- BHydrogen bond
- CNonpolar covalent bond
- DMetallic bond
- EIonic bond
Show answer
E: Ionic bond. Transferring an electron creates oppositely charged ions, Na+ and Cl−, which attract each other in an ionic bond.
Question 9 · Chemistry
Compared with a solution of pH 6, a solution of pH 4 is
- A100 times more acidic
- Btwice as acidic
- C1,000 times more acidic
- D10 times more acidic
- E100 times less acidic
Show answer
A: 100 times more acidic. The pH scale is logarithmic, so each unit is a tenfold change in hydrogen ion concentration. Two units lower means 10 × 10 = 100 times more acidic.
Question 10 · Parts of speech
In the sentence "The nurse carefully adjusted the IV," what part of speech is the word "carefully"?
- Aadjective
- Bverb
- Cadverb
- Dpreposition
- Enoun
Show answer
C: adverb. An adverb modifies a verb, adjective or another adverb. "Carefully" tells how the nurse adjusted the IV.

- Ainflammation of the tonsils
- Babsence of the tonsils
- Cremoval of the tonsils
- Dstudy of the tonsils
- Epain relief for the tonsils
Show answer
A: inflammation of the tonsils. The root "tonsill-" refers to the tonsils, and -itis means inflammation. Removal is -ectomy, study is -ology.
Question 12 · Punctuation
Which sentence is punctuated correctly?
- AThe results were inconclusive: however, the team ordered another test.
- BThe results were inconclusive, however the team ordered another test.
- CThe results were inconclusive, however, the team ordered another test.
- DThe results were inconclusive; however, the team ordered another test.
- EThe results were inconclusive however, the team ordered another test.
Show answer
D: The results were inconclusive; however, the team ordered another test.. A conjunctive adverb such as "however" joining two independent clauses needs a semicolon before it and a comma after it. A comma alone creates a comma splice.
