TSI scores: the 910-990 scale, the benchmarks and what yours means

TSIA2 College Readiness Classification scores run from 910 to 990 in each subject. You are college ready in math with 950 or more, and in English Language Arts and Reading with 945 or more plus an essay score of at least 5. Below a benchmark, a diagnostic test reports a level from 1 to 6, and a high enough level can still make you college ready.

What is the TSI score range?

Each College Readiness Classification test, ELAR and math, is scored from 910 to 990; the essay is scored from 1 to 8, and diagnostic tests report levels from 1 to 6.

The 910-990 scale belongs to the TSIA2, introduced in January 2021. If you see scores like 350 or 351 on an older report, they come from the original TSI Assessment, which used a 310-390 scale. Colleges still honour many older results, but the benchmarks are different, so check which version a score came from.

Your score depends on how many questions you got right and how hard they were. Because the test is adaptive, it is not a simple percentage, and no published table turns a number right into a scale score. That is why our practice test reports percent right and a practice band, never a 910-990 number.

What TSI score is college ready?

950 or higher in math, and 945 or higher in ELAR together with an essay score of 5 or more; there are also diagnostic routes for students just below the CRC benchmark.

SubjectRouteCollege ready when
MathematicsCRC950 to 990
MathematicsDiagnosticCRC below 950 and diagnostic level 6
ELARCRC and essayCRC 945 to 990 and essay 5 to 8
ELARDiagnostic and essayCRC below 945, diagnostic level 5 or 6, and essay 5 to 8

The benchmarks are the same at every Texas public college, because they are set for the state. That makes TSI status portable: once you are college ready in a subject, another Texas public college should accept it.

What do TSI diagnostic levels mean?

A diagnostic level from 1 to 6 describes how far your skills are from college level in a subject, and colleges use it to choose your support course; level 6 in math, or 5 or 6 in ELAR with an essay of 5+, counts as college ready.

If your CRC score is below the benchmark, the TSIA2 gives you a diagnostic test in that subject: 48 questions that look at each skill area more closely. The result is a level, and the lower the level, the more support the college is likely to recommend, from adult basic education at the bottom to a corequisite course alongside the college-level class near the top.

The exact course for each level is your college's decision. Ask your advisor for the placement chart, and ask whether a corequisite option is available: in many Texas colleges you can take the college-level course and a support course in the same semester rather than one after the other.

What is a good TSI essay score?

Five or higher on the 1 to 8 scale; that is the score that, with a 945+ ELAR CRC, makes you college ready, and anything above it does not change your status.

A strong multiple-choice score does not make up for a weak essay, and the other way round: you need both. That is the most common surprise on TSI score reports, where a student with an ELAR score of 960 is still not college ready because the essay came back as a 4. The TSI essay page explains the scoring and a plan that reaches 5.

What happens if I do not meet the TSI benchmark?

You are placed in a developmental or corequisite course in that subject, chosen from your diagnostic level, and you can usually retest under your college's rules.

  • You can still enroll and take courses that have no TSI requirement.
  • Courses that need college readiness, such as College Algebra or English Composition I, will need a support course with them, or before them, until you meet the benchmark.
  • Many Texas colleges offer corequisite courses, where the college course and its support run in the same semester.
  • Retesting is usually allowed. Your college sets the waiting time, any review requirement and the fee.
  • Passing the support course can also make you TSI complete in that subject, depending on the college.

If you are close, a retest after a week of targeted review is often the cheapest route. Find your weakest category with the free TSI practice test and work through how to pass the TSI.

Can SAT or ACT scores replace the TSI?

Yes, subject by subject: SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 480+ and Math 530+ exempt you from ELAR and math, and newer ACT rules use English plus Reading 40+ and Math 22+.

Scores usually need to be from the last five years and sent officially. The TSI test guide lists the other exemptions, including military service and previous college credit.

How do practice scores relate to TSI scores?

They do not convert: our practice bands show how much of the content you have mastered, but only the adaptive TSIA2 produces a 910-990 score.

Use practice scores to compare yourself with yourself. If your algebra drill moves from 50% to 85% over a week, that category is no longer what stands between you and 950, whatever your exact scale score turns out to be.

Florida colleges use a different test with a different scale: the PERT runs from 50 to 150. If you are comparing states, see PERT scores.

Frequently asked questions

Is 940 a passing TSI score?

Not on its own. ELAR needs 945 on the CRC with an essay of 5+, or a diagnostic level of 5 or 6 with an essay of 5+. Math needs 950, or a diagnostic level of 6.

What is the highest TSI score?

990 on each College Readiness Classification test, and 8 on the essay.

How long are TSI scores valid?

Once you are college ready in a subject at a Texas public college, that status generally stays with you. Ask your college about older results.

Do private Texas colleges use the TSI?

The TSI rule covers Texas public colleges and universities. Private colleges set their own placement policies, though some accept TSI results.

When do I get my TSI scores?

Usually on screen or on a printout at the end of the session, with the essay score reported soon after. Your testing center explains how it shares results.
