What is on the WorkKeys Workplace Documents test?
Short and long work documents, each followed by questions on what the document says, what to do next, how a rule applies to a situation, or what a term or policy means.
| Level | What the questions ask (our summary) | Typical trap |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Find a stated detail in a short, simple document | Choosing a true-sounding answer the document does not say |
| 4 | Follow a set of steps, or find a detail in a longer document | Skipping a step or a condition |
| 5 | Apply a policy to a situation, with an "if" or an exception | Missing the exception sentence |
| 6 | Apply a rule to a new situation, or infer the reason behind a policy | Answering from experience instead of the text |
| 7 | Work out the meaning of jargon or a principle and apply it to an unclear situation | Treating a guideline as an absolute rule |
Workplace Documents replaced the older Reading for Information test. The skill is the same, reading to act rather than reading for pleasure, but the documents now look more like the email, policy and procedure pages people use at work.
What kinds of documents are on Workplace Documents?
Memos and emails, policies with rules and exceptions, step-by-step procedures, safety notices, job postings, manuals and contract terms.
| Document | Typical question |
|---|---|
| Memo or email | What changes, when, and for whom |
| Policy | Does this rule apply to this situation, and is there an exception |
| Procedure | What is the next step; what must be done before a step |
| Safety notice | What protective equipment or action is required |
| Job posting or schedule notice | Who qualifies; by when you must apply |
| Manual or contract | What a term means here; what the reason behind a rule is |
What do WorkKeys Workplace Documents questions look like?
A short document and a question with five options. Three examples follow: a policy exception, the next step in a procedure, and applying a set of guidelines.
WorkKeys-style question 1 · Policy with an exception
It is the 10th. Dana wants the 13th off (one day), and Sam has emailed that he will cover her shift. What does the memo allow?
- ADana cannot have the day; she needed 14 days' notice
- BDana can submit the request, because the one-day exception applies
- CDana must ask Sam to submit the request
- DDana must wait until the 13th to ask
- EDana can take the day without submitting anything
Worked answer
B: Dana can submit the request, because the one-day exception applies. The 13th is 3 days away, the request is for 1 day, and a coworker agreed in writing. All three conditions of the exception are met.
- General rule: 14 days' notice. Dana has 3.
- Exception: 1 day off, 3 days' notice, written agreement from a coworker.
- All three hold, so she can submit it.
The trap: Stopping at the first rule. On WorkKeys, the sentence after the rule is often the one that decides it.
WorkKeys-style question 2 · Follow a procedure
You have pressed the stop button on Line 2 because of a jam. What must you do next?
- AOpen the guard door
- BLock out the main power switch and attach your lock
- CRemove the part with the hook tool
- DPress the green start button
- ECall a supervisor
Show the worked answer
B: Lock out the main power switch and attach your lock. Step 2 comes after the stop button: lock out the main power and attach your personal lock before opening anything.
- Find where you are: step 1 is done.
- Read step 2: lock out and attach your lock.
- Opening the guard comes only after that.
The trap: Jumping to the jam itself. Safety procedures are tested in order, and lockout before opening is the step the test checks.
WorkKeys-style question 3 · Apply a principle
A customer's order arrived damaged. Replacing it would cost $35 and the warehouse has not yet confirmed when a replacement could ship. Which response follows the guidelines?
- AIssue a $35 credit now, and tell the customer you will confirm a ship date once the warehouse gives one
- BPromise a replacement by Friday and issue a $35 credit
- CAsk a supervisor to approve the $35 credit
- DTell the customer to call back after the warehouse confirms
- EIssue a $75 credit to be safe
Show the worked answer
A: Issue a $35 credit now, and tell the customer you will confirm a ship date once the warehouse gives one. A $35 credit is under the $50 limit, so no approval is needed, and it settles the complaint on the first contact. You must not promise a date the warehouse has not confirmed.
- $35 is under $50: no supervisor needed.
- No confirmed date: do not promise Friday.
- First-contact goal: settle it now, and follow up on the date.
The trap: Asking a supervisor "to be safe". The document says the representative can do it, and the goal is to settle it on the first contact.

How do I answer Workplace Documents questions?
Read the question first, find the sentence in the document that decides it, then read the next sentence for an exception before you choose.
- Read the question so you know what you are looking for.
- Skim the document's headings or first lines to find the right part.
- Find the sentence that decides the question, and read the one after it: exceptions follow rules.
- Check every condition in the rule against the situation (dates, amounts, who it applies to).
- Choose the option the document supports, even if your own workplace does it differently.
What are the most common Workplace Documents mistakes?
Answering from experience instead of the document, stopping at the rule and missing the exception, and missing one condition out of several.
The wrong options are often good advice. "Ask a supervisor" sounds safe, but if the document says you may act alone, it is the wrong answer. The test checks whether you can follow this document, not whether you are cautious.
Level 5 to 7 questions pile up conditions: a request must be in writing, by a date, for a certain kind of leave. Check each condition one at a time against the situation, and count days carefully: "through Wednesday" includes Wednesday.
How should I study for Workplace Documents?
Take the free drill, then practise the five-step method on real documents: your workplace handbook, a lease, a product manual. Time yourself at about 90 seconds a question.
Most people find Workplace Documents the easiest of the three tests, which is why it is so often the one that drops a level on test day: people read fast and miss the exception. Take it as seriously as the others. The full WorkKeys practice test scores all three, and how to pass WorkKeys has a one-week plan.
