Network Rail builds your online tests around the scheme you pick. Here is how to prepare for the reasoning part

Network Rail does not run one test for every graduate. It sets several short activities that relate to the scheme you apply for, and says each has an ability element. You cannot see yours until you are invited, but you can already train the part that is named: numerical and logical reasoning.

How close is this practice test to the Network Rail test?

Network Rail says its online tests always have an ability element, such as numerical or logical reasoning items. Our reasoning test covers the numerical side with tables and charts, and the CCAT practice test covers number series and logic under a harder clock.

Network Rail does not say how many questions you get, how long each activity runs or which items belong to which scheme. Some activities add behavioural questions, which no reasoning drill can rehearse. The tests are also remotely invigilated, which our practice test is not.

It is a Reasoning-style test: 50 original questions in 45 minutes. Check the test name in your invitation email before you decide how to prepare.

The Network Rail stages, and who says so

Every stage is marked by its source. Stated means the employer says it on its own pages. Candidates report means we found it only in candidate accounts and prep guides.

Why your scheme decides your tests

Network Rail runs graduate schemes in areas as different as civil engineering, finance, operations management, IT and network strategy. Its application guidance says the online tests relate to the scheme you are applying for. In practice that means two applicants to the same employer can sit different activities on the same day.

What stays constant is the ability element. Network Rail says the tests always include numerical or logical reasoning items, and that some also carry behavioural questions. It does not publish counts or timings in the pages we read, so we will not guess them. What you can do is prepare for the one thing that is certain, then read your invitation for the rest.

Training the ability element without knowing the format

Numerical items in tests like these usually give you a table or chart and ask for a percentage, a change or a ratio. Logical items usually give you a rule hidden in a sequence or a set of statements. The two need different habits: the first rewards a tidy method for sums, the second rewards patience in spotting the rule before you answer.

Take the reasoning test above for the numerical habit. Then try the CCAT practice test for the logical one, because its number series and deduction questions are the closest we have to rule-spotting under pressure. Aim to finish both with a minute to spare rather than to score perfectly. Finishing comfortably is what carries over to a short timed activity you have not seen.

Being watched while you test

Network Rail says the online tests are remotely invigilated and that, if it cannot verify your identity, it will not be able to consider your application. It recommends a laptop rather than a mobile, a stable connection, and a working webcam and microphone. Treat that as part of the test.

The week before, open the webcam and microphone in another app and confirm that both work. Choose a room where nobody will walk in, clear the desk, and have photo identification within reach. These checks cost ten minutes and remove the most avoidable reason for a failed attempt.

No AI on the tests, and what that means for practice

Network Rail tells candidates to use no AI on the online testing component. That is a rule about the live tests, not about how you prepare. Using a chatbot to explain a method you missed in practice is a different act from using one during a test, and the first is the more useful of the two.

The risk is dependence. If you only ever practise with help beside you, the live test will feel slower than it should. Do your final two practice runs closed-book and on the clock, then review.

The parts you cannot drill: behavioural items, video and the centre

Some Network Rail activities carry behavioural questions, which are about how you would act at work. There is nothing to calculate. Read each statement for what it assumes about safety, teamwork and responsibility, then answer as you would act. The pages we read do not say how the answers are scored, so the safest preparation is to answer as you would really act.

The video interview asks about motivation and experience. Choose two or three real examples from projects, placements or part-time work, and practise telling each in a minute. For the centre, which may include a presentation, ask the recruiter how long you will have and what the topic is, because the format varies by scheme.

A simple prep plan for Network Rail

  1. 01

Take the free Reasoning test first

It takes 45 minutes and shows where you stand before you spend a single hour on revision. See what the Reasoning test covers.
  2. 02

Read the stages that apply to you

The comparison guides below line Network Rail up against other employers for each stage type, so you can see what is stated and what is only reported.
  3. 03

Add timed mocks if you want a full course

The Reasoning Pass Pack adds timed mocks, topic drills, a score predictor and a study plan. It is £29 (US$39) for this exam or £49 (US$59) for all five, one payment and no subscription. Your free score comes first, so you can decide with a number in hand.

Tips for the Network Rail assessment

  1. 01

    Find your scheme page first

Network Rail says the tests relate to the scheme. Read that scheme's page and any candidate guide before you decide what to practise.
  2. 02

Use the practice questions Network Rail offers

Practice questions come before each test, and Network Rail points to Aon for preparation material. Do them before the live attempt.
  3. 03

Train both numerical and logical reasoning

Network Rail names both. Our reasoning test and the CCAT practice test cover one each.
  4. 04

Test your webcam and microphone early

The tests are remotely invigilated. A device problem on the day is the cause you can remove in advance.
  5. 05

Use a laptop, not a phone

Network Rail recommends a laptop and a stable connection.
  6. 06

Keep AI out of the live test

Network Rail asks for no AI on the online testing. Keep your last practice runs closed-book too.
  7. 07

    Check the intake year

Several pages we read refer to closed 2026 schemes and registration of interest for 2027. Confirm the dates for your scheme.

What score do I need?

Network Rail does not publish a pass mark on the pages we read. Be wary of any site that quotes one.

Is this the Network Rail test?

No. Our practice tests are original questions in a similar style, and LifeScore is not affiliated with Network Rail or Aon.

Checked October 2026, through search summaries of Network Rail's own early careers pages. We did not read the pages in full. The pages gave no question counts, time limits or pass marks, so this page states none, and we could not verify them. Some pages are more than a year old and the 2026 schemes were closed, so confirm the process for your scheme and intake.
