EPA 608 passing score: 18 of 25 on every section

You pass each EPA 608 section with 70%, which on 25 questions means 18 right. Sections are scored on their own, so you can pass some and fail others. Core plus a passed type certifies you in that type; all four passed is Universal. A Type I test taken open book by mail needs 84% (21 of 25) and does not count toward Universal.

What is the passing score for the EPA 608 exam?

70% on each section. With 25 questions, 70% is 17.5, so you need 18 right, which is 72%.

The rule in appendix D to subpart F sets the minimum at 70% for each section. Certifying organizations apply it to their own question sets, so the number of right answers you need is the same everywhere: 18 of 25.

Is each EPA 608 section scored separately?

Yes. Each section is passed or failed on its own, and a pass in one cannot make up for a fail in another.

How many questions can you miss on each EPA 608 section?

Seven. With 25 questions and 18 needed, the eighth miss on any section is a fail, whatever you score on the others.

Where the misses usually come from, section by section (from the topics each section tests)
SectionMisses allowedTopics that cost the most points
Core7Recover, recycle and reclaim; refrigerant classes; psig and psia; cylinder rules
Type I7Recovery percentages by equipment date and compressor; ounces and pounds; system-dependent recovery limits
Type II7The evacuation table; leak rate thresholds and annualizing; superheat and subcooling
Type III7Leak test pressure; recovery levels; charging from a deep vacuum; purge units

Seven sounds like a lot until you notice that one half-learned table can cost four or five of them. Type II questions on evacuation levels all come from the same eight rows, so a technician who mixes up two rows can miss every one of those questions in a single sitting. That is why the plan here starts with the tables, not with reading.

It also explains why a strong total can hide a fail. Someone who scores 24, 23, 22 and 17 has 86 of 100, a number that looks comfortable, and still leaves without Universal because one section is a single question short.

Why is Universal harder to pass than a single type?

Because it is four separate pass marks, not one. Every extra section is another chance for one weak table to cost you the whole certification.

A simple illustration (our arithmetic, not exam data): if you were 90% sure of passing each section on its own, your chance of passing all four in one sitting would be 0.9 × 0.9 × 0.9 × 0.9, about 66%. At 97% sure on each, it rises to about 89%. The way to make Universal safe is to make every section safe, which is what a margin of two or three questions per section does.

Because passed sections stay passed, a miss on one section is not the end: you retake only that section. But it costs a second booking and a second fee, and until Core is passed you hold no certification at all.

What is the passing score for an open-book Type I test?

84%, which is 21 of 25. An open-book Type I taken by mail is allowed, but it cannot be combined with other sections into Universal.

If you might ever want Universal, take Type I proctored with the other sections. The higher mark is the price of the open book.

What happens if you fail an EPA 608 section?

You retake only the section you failed, with your certifying organization's retake rules and fee. The sections you passed stay passed.

Federal rules set no waiting period between attempts; each certifying organization sets its own policy and fee. Before you rebook, find what cost you the section: for most people it is the numbers (evacuation levels, leak thresholds, recovery percentages) rather than the concepts.

Take a full timed section in practice and aim for 20 or more before you go back. The free EPA 608 practice test scores all four sections against 18 of 25.

What score should I aim for in EPA 608 practice?

At least 20 of 25 on every section, on two different practice sets. That leaves room for two unlucky questions on the day.

With only 7 misses allowed per section, a margin of two questions is the difference between a calm pass and a retake. Two misses usually come from one table you half-remember, so learn the evacuation table and the leak thresholds until you can write them out.

The plan to get there is in how to pass the EPA 608, and the whole certification path is in the EPA 608 certification guide.

Do I ever need to pass the EPA 608 again?

No. Section 608 certification does not expire, so once you pass a type it is yours for life.

Keep your certification card, or know how to get a copy from your certifying organization: wholesalers ask for it before selling refrigerant, and employers ask for it when you start.

Frequently asked questions

Is the EPA 608 pass mark 70% or 72%?

The rule says 70%. On 25 questions that rounds up to 18 right, which is 72%.

Can I pass Universal with one weak section?

No. Every section must reach 18 of 25.

Are all certifying organizations' tests passed the same way?

Yes, at 70% per section, under the same federal rule.

Do I need Core for every type?

Yes. A type counts only with a Core pass.

What happens to the sections I passed if I fail one?

They stay passed. You retake only the section you failed, under your certifying organization's retake rules and fee, and you are certified in a type once it and Core are both passed.

Is there a time limit on the EPA 608 exam?

Each certifying organization sets its own. Our practice pace is 30 minutes per section, which leaves time to check every recovery question against its row in the table.
