In a class of 30, about 16 people would score 101 or lower and about 14 higher. That is where most people land.
An IQ of 101 falls in the average IQ range, which covers 90 to 109. Find 101 on the IQ chart, or check how rare any score is with the IQ rarity calculator.
Is 101 really above average?
Technically yes. The average is 100, and an IQ of 101 is higher than 52.7% of people, against exactly 50% for 100. In practice a one-point gap means nothing.
- IQ 99: higher than 47.3% of people
- IQ 100: higher than 50% of people
- IQ 101: higher than 52.7% of people
- IQ 102: higher than 55.3% of people
- IQ 105: higher than 63.1% of people
Even professionally supervised tests carry a margin of error of roughly 5 points either side, so a 101 cannot be told apart from a 98 or a 104. The same person tested twice could land on either side of 100 purely from sleep, mood or a different set of puzzles.
The useful reading is the band, not the number. About 68% of people score between 85 and 115, and 101 sits near the middle of it. Compare any two scores in the IQ percentile calculator or on the IQ chart.
Looking for the basics of IQ?
Some people who search for "IQ 101" want an introduction to IQ rather than the score. The short version: IQ scores are scaled so that 100 is the average and about two thirds of people fall between 85 and 115. A test result is an estimate of reasoning ability on one day, not a verdict on your intelligence.

IQ 101: where most people land
If you lined up 100 random adults by score, a 101 would put you at about position 53 from the bottom. That is inside the 85 to 115 band that roughly 46 million people in the UK share.
Average is not a polite word for mediocre. It is where the test is designed to place the typical adult, and it is the level that most schooling, jobs and everyday tasks are built around.
Scores near the middle of the curve are the most precisely measured, because tests have the most data there. A 101 is one of the more trustworthy numbers an IQ test can give you.
What 101 means in everyday life
The 1-point gap between 101 and 100 is about the size of the test's own margin of error. You would not spot it in a conversation or at work.
You can follow complex instructions, learn new software, manage money and pick up a trade or profession. The ceiling on those is set far more by practice and interest than by a few IQ points.
Being in the average range says nothing about ambition. Careers, qualifications and creative work are open across it, and many people in it are highly skilled in their field.
How to get the most from your strengths
The most useful thing to do with a 101 is not to chase a higher number but to work with how you think best. A few habits help at any score:
- Lean on structure. Checklists, notes and routines free up working memory for the hard part of a problem.
- Give unfamiliar problems time. Speed is where average scores differ most, and most real decisions are not timed.
- Play to your pattern. If visual puzzles felt easier than number ones, that is useful information about how you learn.
How many people have an IQ of 101 or higher?
On a bell curve with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15, about 47% of people score 101 or higher. Applied to whole populations:
| Where | Population | IQ 101+ |
|---|---|---|
| UK | 68 million | 32 million |
| US | 335 million | 160 million |
| World | 8.1 billion | 3.8 billion |
In a class of 30, you would expect about 14 people to score 101 or higher.
Exactly 101, counting anyone between 100.5 and 101.5, is about 1 in 38. In the US that is about 8.9 million people, and in the UK about 1.8 million people.
These are model estimates: a bell curve applied to whole populations, including children, rounded. They are not census counts, and real test norms differ a little from one test to another.
How rare is an IQ of 101?
101 is not rare in any sense: 47% of people match or beat it. Five points either way only moves that share to 34% or 61%.
What your 101 could really be. Even a good supervised test has a margin of error of roughly 5 points either side. A true score anywhere from 96 to 106 would be consistent with a 101, which spans the 39.5th to the 65.5th percentile. Short online tests have wider margins.
Which scale was it on? Close to 100, it barely matters. Even on an SD 24 scale, a 101 converts to about 101 on the usual SD 15 scale, so you can compare it with this page almost directly.
Famous people with an estimated IQ near 101
Nobody famous has a verified IQ in most cases, and retrospective estimates are only made for a narrow group.
The estimates on our historical profiles run from 115 to 250, so none lands close to 101. Historians only estimate IQs for people who did something extraordinary, which skews the list. It says nothing about what famous people could actually score.

Degrees, universities and jobs around 101
Our degree, university and job profiles carry rough IQ benchmarks. These are the ones within a few points of 101. The education figures are derived from admissions-test averages, not from IQ testing.
No employer or university uses these numbers as a cutoff. They are loose comparisons, and plenty of people above and below them thrive in each path.

Percentiles and counts use a normal distribution with mean 100 and standard deviation 15. Real tests have their own norms, confidence intervals and ceilings, so treat every figure here as an approximation, not a diagnosis. Two tests often give different numbers for the same person: here is why.
