ASVAB scores for Army jobs
Army jobs are matched to ASVAB line scores, not to your AFQT: you need an AFQT of 31 to enlist, then the line score your MOS asks for, such as CO 87 for Infantryman (11B), ST 101 for Intelligence Analyst (35F) or GT 110 and ST 112 for Cyber Operations Specialist (17C). The table lists 32 MOS minimums from the Army's own job pages.

What ASVAB score do you need for each Army job?
Each Army job (MOS) sets a minimum on one or two line scores: in the 32 jobs below they run from FA 83 for Cannon Crewmember to ST 112 for Signals Intelligence Analyst and Cyber Operations Specialist. Search by MOS or job, or filter by field or line score.

"Check my scores" opens our ASVAB line score calculator already set to that job: type the standard scores from your score sheet and it shows whether you clear each line. The Army's full MOS list with every minimum (DA PAM 611-21) is not public, so jobs not shown here are ones whose page we could not read, not jobs without a minimum.
How do Army ASVAB line scores work?
The Army adds groups of your subtest standard scores into ten line scores (aptitude area composites) and reports each on a scale centred on 100. GT is Verbal Expression plus Arithmetic Reasoning; the others mix in math, science and the technical subtests.
| Line score | Subtests | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| GT General Technical | Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning (VE + AR) | Army page |
| CL Clerical | Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge (VE + AR + MK) | Army page |
| CO Combat | Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Auto and Shop, Mechanical Comprehension (VE + AS + MC) | Army page. Older guides give AR + AS + MC. |
| EL Electronics | General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Electronics Information | Army page |
| FA Field Artillery | Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Mechanical Comprehension | Army page |
| GM General Maintenance | General Science, Auto and Shop, Mathematics Knowledge, Electronics Information | Army page |
| MM Mechanical Maintenance | Auto and Shop, Mechanical Comprehension, Electronics Information | Army page |
| OF Operators and Food | Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Auto and Shop, Mechanical Comprehension (VE + AS + MC) | Army page |
| SC Surveillance and Communications | Guides give VE + AR + AS + MC | Reported. Not spelled out on the Army pages we could read. |
| ST Skilled Technical | Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, General Science, Mechanical Comprehension, Mathematics Knowledge (GS + VE + MC + MK) | Army page |
Two things follow from that table. First, the four AFQT subjects are not just your entry ticket: Verbal Expression sits inside GT, CL, SC, ST, CO, OF, and Arithmetic Reasoning or Mathematics Knowledge sits inside 7 of the ten. Second, a strong technical subtest can lift a line score without touching your AFQT, which is why two recruits with the same AFQT can qualify for very different jobs.
The Army converts each sum to its 100-centred scale with tables it does not publish. Our calculator estimates every line score as twice the average of its subtest standard scores, which matches the plain VE + AR rule for GT exactly and lands within a few points for the rest. Treat a result within five points of a job minimum as too close to call.
What AFQT score does the Army require?
An AFQT of 31 to enlist with a high school diploma; applicants who score 21 to 30 may be offered the Future Soldier Preparatory Course, and after a retest the Army uses your most recent score, not your highest.

The AFQT is a percentile built from Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge. The same job tables for the other branches: Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.
Which Army jobs need the highest ASVAB scores?
In our table, the highest single bars are ST 112 for 17C Cyber Operations Specialist and 35N Signals Intelligence Analyst, then GT 110 for 17C and for 18X Special Forces Candidate. ST appears in 11 of the 32 jobs, more than any other line score.
| MOS | Minimum | Field |
|---|---|---|
| 17C Cyber Operations Specialist | GT 110 and ST 112 | Cyber and signal |
| 35N Signals Intelligence Analyst | ST 112 | Intelligence |
| 18X Special Forces Candidate | GT 110 and CO 100 | Combat |
| 68F Physical Therapy Specialist | ST 101 and GT 107 | Medical |
| 68W Combat Medic Specialist | ST 101 and GT 107 | Medical |
| 27D Paralegal Specialist | CL 105 | Admin and logistics |
The pattern is plain once you sort the table: intelligence, cyber, medical and IT jobs gate on ST and GT, combat arms on CO, artillery on FA, and the mechanic and aviation repair jobs on MM. Officer candidate school, warrant officer flight training and special operations add GT minimums of their own; the Army's Ranger page, for example, asks for a "TECH score" of 105 or above.
If you have a target job, write its line score down first and work backwards to the subtests inside it. That is a far better use of your study time than chasing a higher AFQT for its own sake.
GT and ST start with the AFQT subjects
Verbal Expression and math sit inside most Army line scores. 6 full mocks and 16 drills train exactly those.
The ASVAB Pass Pack gives you 6 full mocks on the real clock, 16 drills of 12 questions for the sections that cost you points, and a predictor that turns your mocks into the odds of reaching your target. One payment, no subscription, and your free score stays free.
Prep courses for these tests usually cost $19 to $129. The ASVAB Pass Pack is US$39 (£29), once.

How do I raise an Army line score?
Find the subtests inside the line score your job needs, then work on the ones you score lowest on. By the formulas above, Verbal Expression and Mechanical Comprehension each feed six of the ten Army line scores, and Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge five each.
| Subtest | Line scores | Which |
|---|---|---|
| Verbal Expression (WK + PC) | 6 | GT, CL, SC, ST, CO, OF |
| Mechanical Comprehension | 6 | SC, ST, FA, MM, CO, OF |
| Arithmetic Reasoning | 5 | GT, CL, EL, SC, FA |
| Mathematics Knowledge | 5 | CL, EL, GM, ST, FA |
| Auto and Shop Information | 5 | GM, SC, MM, CO, OF |
| General Science | 3 | EL, GM, ST |
| Electronics Information | 3 | EL, GM, MM |
| Assembling Objects | 0 | none |
For GT, it is only two things: Verbal Expression and Arithmetic Reasoning. Work through the Word Knowledge guide and the Paragraph Comprehension guide for the verbal half, and the Arithmetic Reasoning guide for word problems; each has a free timed drill.
For ST, add General Science, Mechanical Comprehension and the formulas in the Mathematics Knowledge guide. For MM and CO, Auto and Shop and Mechanical Comprehension carry the weight; our mechanical aptitude test practises the gears, levers and pulleys MC asks about.
Line scores come from real subtest scores, so the only way to change them is a retest. The Army uses your most recent score, so retest only once your practice scores are clearly higher. The how to pass the ASVAB guide has a 7-day plan, and the free ASVAB-style practice test shows your weakest AFQT subject in 40 minutes.
Why do Army line score requirements differ between sources?
Because the Army's master list is not public, its own recruiting pages are not all updated at once, and many prep sites copy older figures. We show what each Army job page says, link it, and note where two Army pages disagree.
The authority for every MOS minimum is DA PAM 611-21, which the Army does not publish openly. The public versions are the job pages on goarmy.com, and the desktop, mobile and Army Reserve versions of the same job are sometimes out of step: 68W shows ST 101 on one page and ST 101 with GT 107 on another; 25U shows SC 95 and EL 95 on the main page and SC 92 and EL 93 on an older Reserve page. Where that happens our table gives the main page's figure and the note gives the other.
The Army also adjusts minimums with its recruiting needs, and waivers exist. So use the table to pick targets and plan your study, and confirm the exact number with a recruiter before you sign for a job.
