ASVAB scores for Marine Corps jobs
The Marine Corps uses four ASVAB line scores for jobs, GT, MM, EL and CL, on top of an AFQT of 31 (50 with a GED). Published examples: GT 110 for Imagery Analysis Specialist (0241), CL or GT 110 for Intelligence Specialist (0231), and GT 95, EL 100 or CL 100 for the new 0315 Scout. Most entry-level minimums are not on a public Marine Corps page, so 9 of the 21 rows are reported figures, labelled as such.

What ASVAB score do you need for each Marine Corps job?
Each Marine Corps MOS sets a minimum on one of four line scores, most often GT. In the 21 jobs below, 12 come from Marine Corps career sheets, messages and manuals and the rest are reported by Military.com, labelled on each row. Search by MOS or job, or filter by field or line score.

3 of the rows are lateral moves, open to Marines already serving, not to new recruits; they are here because their published GT minimums show where the bar sits for technical work. The full entry-level list is in the MOS Manual, a long PDF we could only partly read, so jobs not shown here are ones we could not confirm, not jobs without a minimum.
There is no "Check my scores" link on this page. The Marine Corps does not publish its line score formulas or conversion tables on a page we could read, and the two published versions disagree (below), so any calculator figure would be a guess.
How do Marine Corps ASVAB line scores work?
The Marine Corps combines subtest scores into four line scores, General Technical (GT), Mechanical Maintenance (MM), Electronics (EL) and Clerical (CL), each on a scale with a mean of 100. Every job sets a minimum on one of them, sometimes with an either-or.
| Line score | Version citing MCO 1230.5C | Military.com version | Jobs in our table |
|---|---|---|---|
| GT General Technical | VE + AR + MC | VE + AR | 17 |
| MM Mechanical Maintenance | AR + EI + MC + AS | GS + AS + MK + MC | 0 |
| EL Electronics | AR + MK + EI + GS | GS + AR + MK + EI | 3 |
| CL Clerical | VE + MK | VE + AR + MK | 12 |
Both versions agree that GT contains Verbal Expression (Word Knowledge plus Paragraph Comprehension) and Arithmetic Reasoning, and that EL is built from General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge and Electronics Information. They disagree on whether GT also includes Mechanical Comprehension, on what goes into MM, and on whether CL includes Arithmetic Reasoning.
For study purposes the disagreement matters less than it looks: whichever version is current, Verbal Expression and Arithmetic Reasoning are inside GT, and those are two of the four AFQT subjects. The 100-centred scale comes from the 1997 ASVAB score scale study on the official ASVAB site.
What AFQT score do the Marines require?
An AFQT of 31 with a high school diploma, or 50 with a GED or non-traditional diploma, per marines.com. The job's line score minimum comes on top.

Why does the GT score matter most in the Marine Corps?
Because GT is the line score most Marine jobs use: 17 of the 21 jobs in our table name it. Intelligence jobs ask for GT 105 to 110, and lateral moves into technical fields often set GT 100 to 110.
GT also follows you through a career. Lateral moves into intelligence, explosive ordnance disposal or community services publish GT minimums (GT 110 for EOD, MOS 2336, in a recent MARADMIN), and commissioning programs look for high GT scores. A recruit who enters with GT 90 for the infantry can find those doors shut later unless they retest.
The Marine Corps has also been raising its sights. In 2020 Military.com reported that the Commandant wanted riflemen at GT 100, above the 80 or 90 printed in most guides. Whatever the current figure, more GT points mean more choice of job at the start and later.
GT is Verbal Expression and Arithmetic Reasoning
Both sit inside the Marine GT on every version of the formula. 6 full mocks and 16 drills train them.
The ASVAB Pass Pack gives you 6 full mocks on the real clock, 16 drills of 12 questions for the sections that cost you points, and a predictor that turns your mocks into the odds of reaching your target. One payment, no subscription, and your free score stays free.
Prep courses for these tests usually cost $19 to $129. The ASVAB Pass Pack is US$39 (£29), once.

How do I raise my Marine Corps GT score?
Work on Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Arithmetic Reasoning, the parts of GT every published version agrees on. If the MCO 1230.5C version is current, Mechanical Comprehension counts too.
For the verbal half, use the Word Knowledge guide and the Paragraph Comprehension guide; for the math, the Arithmetic Reasoning guide and, for EL and CL, the Mathematics Knowledge guide. Each has a free timed drill. For MM and the possible MC part of GT, the mechanical aptitude test practises the same ideas.
Line scores come from real subtest scores, so the only way to change them is a retest. The official rule is one calendar month after a first test, another month after the second, then six months. The how to pass the ASVAB guide has a plan, and the free ASVAB-style practice test shows your weakest AFQT subject first.
Why do Marine Corps ASVAB requirements differ between sources?
Because the Marine Corps sets prerequisites in an MOS Manual that changes each fiscal year and is published as a long PDF, not a job-by-job web page, so most prep sites copy older figures. We label every row official or reported and note the disagreements.
Rifleman (0311) is the clearest case: older guides print GT 80, Military.com lists 90, and the 2020 report says the Commandant wanted 100. Intelligence Specialist (0231) is CL 110 or GT 110 on the Marine Corps intelligence career sheet and GT 110 alone on Military.com. Each case is in the row's note.
The formulas themselves disagree too, as the table above shows. Use this page to choose a target and plan your study, then ask your recruiter for the figure in the current MOS Manual before you sign.
