ASVAB scores for Navy jobs

The Navy sets each rating's ASVAB standard as a sum of subtest standard scores, any one of which qualifies: for example VE+AR 92 for Logistics Specialist, VE+AR+MK+MC 210 or AR+MK+EI+GS 210 for Electrician's Mate, and AR+MK+EI+GS 222 or AR+2MK+GS 230 for Electronics Technician. You also need an AFQT of 31. The table lists 33 ratings from MyNavy HR and Navy recruiting pages.

"Check my scores" (on 32 of the 33 ratings) opens our ASVAB line score calculator with that rating's sums loaded: type the standard scores from your score sheet and it adds them up for you. Ratings whose only route uses a test outside the ASVAB, or a retired subtest, have no check link.

The Navy keeps the binding list, the C-WAY rating list, inside its own systems. The community pages and the last public rating list are what you can read; where they differ, the note on the row says so.

How do Navy ASVAB line scores work?

The Navy adds the standard scores of two to four subtests and compares the total with the rating's minimum. Most ratings give two or three combinations, and meeting any one is enough. There is no conversion step: what you add up from your score sheet is the number the Navy checks.

The subtest letters in Navy requirements, and how many ratings in our table use each

AR Arithmetic Reasoning29
MK Mathematics Knowledge27
MC Mechanical Comprehension14
GS General Science13
EI Electronics Information11

PC Paragraph Comprehension on its own (in a few older combinations)3

Read a requirement like "VE+AR+MK+MC 210" as: take your Verbal Expression, Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge and Mechanical Comprehension standard scores, add them, and the total must be 210 or more. Standard scores sit on a scale with a mean of 50, so four average scores make 200. A "2MK" means Mathematics Knowledge is counted twice, which is how the technical ratings weight math.

Verbal Expression is a single standard score built from Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension and printed on your score sheet. A few older combinations still name PC on its own, and some name CS (Coding Speed), a subtest no longer given; those routes are effectively closed, so you qualify through the other combination.

This is why Navy sums reward balance. A strong Mechanical Comprehension score can carry a weaker Arithmetic Reasoning score on a four-score sum, which is not true of a single minimum. Our line score calculator does the adding for you.

What AFQT score does the Navy require?

An AFQT of 31. The Navy Recruiting Manual also says an applicant who scores under 50 needs a high school diploma or equivalent, and MILPERSMAN 1306-618 allows small waivers on rating sums but never on a single-score minimum.

Which Navy ratings need the highest ASVAB scores?

The Nuclear Field is the highest in our table at 252 on AR+MK+EI+GS or VE+AR+MK+MC (or 235 with the Navy Advanced Programs Test), then Cyber Warfare Technician at 239, then the electronics ratings around 222 to 230.

The six ratings in our table with the highest single figure
RatingRequirementCommunity
NF Nuclear Field (EM, ET, MM nuclear)AR+MK+EI+GS or VE+AR+MK+MC 252; or 235 with the NAPTNuclear
CWT Cyber Warfare TechnicianGS+AR+2MK 239, or AR+MK+MC+VE 239, or MK+CT+VE 176 with Cyber Test 60Electronics and cyber
ET Electronics TechnicianAR+MK+EI+GS 222, or AR+2MK+GS 230Electronics and cyber
FC Fire ControlmanAR+MK+EI+GS 222, or AR+2MK+GS 230Electronics and cyber
STG Sonar Technician (Surface)AR+MK+EI+GS 223, or AR+MK+VE+AO 228Electronics and cyber
AC Air Traffic ControllerVE+AR+MK+MC 220, or PC+AR+MK 166Aviation

Four subtests at 63 each add up to 252, so the Nuclear Field asks for roughly one standard deviation above average across math, science and electronics or mechanics. The electronics ratings (ET, FC, STG) need about 56 a subtest. By contrast Logistics Specialist at VE+AR 92 asks for two scores averaging 46, a little below the mean.

Special warfare and diving list more than one route and add fitness tests and screening; their ASVAB sums are modest compared with the nuclear and cyber ratings, but the pipelines that follow are not.

How do I raise my Navy line scores?

Work on the subtests in the sums for the rating you want, starting with the AFQT subjects: Verbal Expression and Arithmetic Reasoning each appear in 29 of the 33 ratings in our table and Mathematics Knowledge in 27, so a few standard-score points there move several sums at once.

Pick the combination that suits your strengths. Electrician's Mate, for example, accepts VE+AR+MK+MC 210 or AR+MK+EI+GS 210: if you are stronger on mechanics than electronics, aim for the first.

For the math, use the Arithmetic Reasoning guide for word problems and the Mathematics Knowledge guide for algebra and geometry; both have a free timed drill. For VE, the Word Knowledge guide and the Paragraph Comprehension guide. For MC, the mechanical aptitude test covers gears, levers and pulleys.

Your sums come from real subtest scores, so the only way to change them is a retest. The official rule is one calendar month after a first test, another month after the second, then six months. The how to pass the ASVAB guide has a plan, and the free ASVAB-style practice test shows your weakest AFQT subject first.

Why do Navy ASVAB requirements differ between sources?

Because the Navy updates its standards inside the C-WAY system, its community pages are updated at different times, and the last public rating list is from 2023 to 2024. We show the figure on the page we link and note where Navy sources differ.

Master-at-Arms is a good example: the security community page gives VE+AR+MK+MC 196, while a 2025 Navy source gives a lower figure. Special warfare is another: navy.com pages list different combinations for SEAL candidates. Each such case is in the row's note.

Prep sites often copy a table from years ago, sometimes with Coding Speed routes or minimums the Navy has since lowered or raised. Use the table to choose your targets, then confirm the current figure with a recruiter, who sees the live C-WAY list.

Frequently asked questions

What ASVAB score do you need for the Navy?

An AFQT of 31, and an applicant under 50 needs a high school diploma or equivalent, per the Navy Recruiting Manual. Then each rating has its own line-score sum, listed on this page.

How do Navy line scores work?

The Navy adds the standard scores of three or four subtests and compares the total with the rating's minimum. Most ratings give two or three combinations and you need to meet only one. "2MK" means Mathematics Knowledge counted twice.

What does VE mean on Navy ASVAB requirements?

Verbal Expression, a single standard score built from Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension and printed on your score sheet. It appears in most Navy sums.

What is CS in Navy ASVAB requirements?

Coding Speed. It still appears as an alternative route on some rating pages (YN, PS, OS, HM), but it was dropped from the ASVAB, so today you qualify through the other combination.

Can I retake the ASVAB to get a better Navy rating?

Military.com reports that the Navy is the service most likely to allow a retest for job purposes. The waiting rule is one calendar month, another month, then six months. Ask your recruiter before you book.

Are ASVAB waivers possible in the Navy?

MILPERSMAN 1306-618 allows small waivers on combinations: up to 6 points on a two-score sum, 9 on three and 12 on four, never on a single-score minimum such as MC 51. Whether one is granted depends on the rating's needs.
