When FBI trainee Clarice Starling first visits his cell, Lecter reads her background within minutes from her bag, her shoes and her accent: her rural roots and her ambition to escape them. He is right, and it unsettles her. The scene sets up the whole relationship: he sees her more clearly than anyone at the FBI.

Quid pro quo clues
Lecter helps Clarice hunt the serial killer Buffalo Bill, but only in riddles and in exchange for her personal memories. One clue is the name Louis Friend, an anagram of iron sulfide, fool's gold. His clues point to the truth that Bill covets what he sees every day. He profiles the killer accurately from files alone.

The Memphis escape
Moved to a temporary cell in Memphis, Lecter uses a small piece of a pen to slip his handcuffs, kills his two guards and disguises himself using one guard's face. The police carry him out in an ambulance as a wounded officer. He had worked out the escape from the moment he saw the setup.
