HCLTech's Ascend assessment has three gates in order. Clear the cognitive test and the coding test to reach Versant
HCLTech's recruitment page for its AMP programme (Ascend, Momentum, Polaris) lays out the online assessment in sequence: a cognitive test, a coding or technical test, then a Versant English test for those who clear the first two. The page is about two years old, so confirm it for your drive.

How close is this practice test to the HCLTech test?
HCLTech describes the Ascend online assessment as opening with a cognitive test of numerical, verbal and reasoning ability that runs about 90 minutes. Our reasoning test covers the numerical and verbal skills, and the CCAT practice test adds logic and number series under a faster clock.
HCLTech's page also describes a 60 to 90 minute coding or technical test and a Versant spoken English test, neither of which our practice tests cover, and the page appeared to be about two years old. We cannot tell how many questions the cognitive test has or how it is scored.
It is a Reasoning-style test: 50 original questions in 45 minutes. Check the test name in your invitation email before you decide how to prepare.

The HCLTech stages, and who says so
Every stage is marked by its source. Stated means the employer says it on its own pages. Candidates report means we found it only in candidate accounts and prep guides.

Three tests, and a gate between each
HCLTech describes the Ascend online assessment as three stages in order. A cognitive test comes first, then a coding or technical test, then Versant. It says only candidates who clear the cognitive and coding tests move on to Versant. So the English test is a third gate, not a make-up for a weak earlier result.
That gives a simple planning rule. Do not neglect any of the three. A candidate who is excellent at coding but unprepared for the cognitive test will not reach the stage where coding counts.
Ninety minutes of cognitive questions
The cognitive test covers numerical, verbal and reasoning ability and takes about 90 minutes. HCLTech does not say how many questions it has or whether sections are separately timed. Ninety minutes is a long time to stay accurate, so the preparation is partly stamina.
Build it in two steps. First, take the free reasoning test above in one sitting for the numerical and verbal skills. Then take the CCAT practice test for the logic and number-series work. Together they give you about an hour of mixed questions with a break between.
Sixty to ninety minutes of code
The coding or technical test lasts 60 to 90 minutes. HCLTech does not name a language or platform on the page we read. Check your drive notice for the languages allowed, and practise in one of them until reading input, writing a loop and printing output feel automatic.
Time is the constraint, so practise finishing a small problem in 30 minutes, then moving on. Partial credit usually favours working code for part of the problem over unfinished code for all of it, but check the rules in your notice.
Versant: the spoken English gate
HCLTech says the Versant test checks spoken and listening English and that a B1-level score in the range 46 to 56 is needed to qualify. Versant is a spoken test, so practise by speaking, not reading: repeat sentences aloud, describe pictures, and answer short questions out loud.
A quiet room and a working headset matter more here than in any other stage. Test the microphone beforehand.
After the tests: interviews, tracks and fees
Candidates who pass go to technical and HR interviews. HCLTech says the top 10 percent who clear Ascend may be evaluated further, with extra interviews, hackathons or technical tests, and may be placed in the higher Momentum or Polaris tracks according to performance and ranking.
HCLTech also states that neither it, its subsidiaries nor its preferred recruitment partners will ever ask for fees for any purpose during recruitment. If anyone does, it is not HCLTech. See our guide to IT services hiring tests in India for how this compares with TCS and others.

Tips for the HCLTech assessment
- 01
Treat all three online stages as gates
You must clear the cognitive and coding tests to reach Versant. - 02
Build stamina for 90 minutes
Run the reasoning test and the CCAT practice test back to back. - 03
Pick one coding language and drill it
Confirm which are allowed in your drive notice. - 04
Practise speaking for Versant
It tests spoken and listening English. - 05
Test your microphone and headset
Audio problems are an avoidable risk in a spoken test. - 06
Prepare for puzzle-style interview questions
HCLTech says the technical interview can include them. - 07
Never pay anyone
HCLTech says it never asks for fees at any point.

Checked October 2026, through search summaries of HCLTech's own pages. We did not read them in full. The AMP page was about two years old, the summaries did not describe the current format for other roles, and HCLTech publishes no cognitive test question count or pass mark, so we could not verify those.
