Coding and technical tests: the times, rules and aptitude stages that come with them
Technical roles add a coding or technical stage to the usual online tests. Employers state times, proctoring rules and sometimes the platform. This page compares them and shows the aptitude stages that travel with them, which are the part our practice tests cover.

Who says what, side by side
Each row comes from that employer's own page on this site. 11 employers, checked October 2026. Stated means the employer says it. Candidates report means we found it only in candidate accounts.
| Employer | The stage, in its words | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Barclays | Technical assessment (some programmes)Technical skills, for programmes such as the Explorer Developer programme | Stated by Barclays |
| NatWest Group | Technical tests (technical roles) (15 minutes for SQL, 60 minutes for coding)A timed SQL multiple-choice test and a coding simulation | Stated by NatWest Group |
| Accenture | Online technical assessment (Usually within 72 hours of invitation; about 30 to 90 minutes in one sitting)Problem-solving, logical reasoning and applied technical knowledge in a coding environment, scaled to your experience | Stated by Accenture |
| Accenture | Cognitive and technical assessment (freshers) (About 90 minutes, online and proctored, reported)Aptitude and reasoning, verbal ability, common software proficiency, pseudo-code and basic IT concepts | Candidates report |
| Accenture | Coding roundA coding problem, for fresher hiring tracks that include it | Candidates report |
| Capgemini | Coding or technical assessmentProgramming and technical knowledge, proctored online | Stated by Capgemini |
| TCS | Part B: Advanced Coding (90 minutes)Programming problems | Stated by TCS |
| Revature | Programming, SQL and writingBasic programming, one or two coding questions, an SQL question and an email-writing section | Candidates report |
| Amazon | Technical or coding assessment (For SDE II: 90 minutes technical, 20 minutes design scenarios, 8-minute survey)For software roles: coding and system design scenarios, with a short work style survey | Stated by Amazon |
| Aviva | Numerical reasoning or coding testAdded by pathway: numerical reasoning for accountancy, actuarial, claims, pricing and underwriting, and wealth; a coding test for software development and data and analytics | Stated by Aviva |
| Standard Chartered | Coding SimulationA timed, automatically scored programming assessment for some technical roles, in some cases with AI-based proctoring | Stated by Standard Chartered |
| HCLTech | Coding or technical test (60 to 90 minutes)A programming or technical assessment | Stated by HCLTech |
| Infosys | Fresher aptitude test (sample) (100 minutes, with the pseudocode section timed separately at 10 minutes)A reasoning section with data interpretation and data sufficiency, a verbal section on critical reasoning, and a pseudocode section | Stated by Infosys |
| Infosys | Coding contest (HackWithInfy)A coding contest whose first round is an individual online test on the Infosys assessment platform | Stated by Infosys |
The times employers state
TCS states a 90-minute coding section in its Advanced part. HCLTech describes a coding or technical test of 60 to 90 minutes. Accenture says its technical assessment takes about 30 to 90 minutes, in a coding environment, within 72 hours of the invitation. NatWest states 15 minutes for SQL and 60 minutes for coding in technical roles.
The spread is wide, so find your own time. The shorter ones reward a rehearsed workflow; the longer ones reward planning, because you can lose half an hour on a single bug.
Rules about AI, proctoring and platforms
Accenture says external AI tools are not allowed, with a labelled built-in assistant in some coding questions. Standard Chartered says its Coding Simulation is scored automatically and can use AI-based proctoring. Revature says its online assessment uses a proctoring browser. Capgemini says its coding and technical assessments are proctored online.
So expect to be watched. Close other programs, clear your desk and use the device the notice names.
The aptitude stage that travels with the coding test
At many IT services employers the coding test is only one part. TCS starts with Foundation sections for numerical, verbal and reasoning ability. HCLTech starts with a cognitive test. Infosys's published sample has reasoning and verbal sections before pseudocode. If you fail the aptitude gate, your coding is never read.
This is the part you can drill with our free tests: the reasoning test for numerical and verbal skills, and the CCAT test for logic and number series.
Preparing the code half
Pick one language the employer allows and practise reading input, writing a loop, handling edge cases and printing output until none of it needs thought. Practise on the platform the employer names where one is published: Standard Chartered names a Coding Simulation and Accenture points candidates to HackerRank practice.
Time is the constraint. Practise finishing a small problem in 30 minutes, then moving on. If your notice says partial solutions earn credit, submit working code for part of a problem rather than unfinished code for all of it.
Honest limits
Several of these figures come from pages that are one or two years old, and some, such as HCLTech's, say so. Employers change their platforms often. Your drive notice or invitation is the authority.
Beware of anyone who charges you for a job. HCLTech states that neither it nor its recruitment partners ask for fees at any stage, and Accenture warns about payment requests. See our IT services assessment guide for the aptitude half of these processes.

Employer pages in this guide
- Barclays assessmentTwo short interactive assessments. It states no reasoning test, though candidates report one.
- NatWest Group assessmentWork scenarios, a mostly untimed skills assessment and six recorded video questions.
- Accenture assessmentA coding-environment technical assessment within 72 hours, and a clear rule against external AI.
- Capgemini assessmentIndia aptitude on logical, verbal and quantitative skills, then coding. UK Invent uses video and a centre.
