IQ 175: beyond what most tests can measure
Taken literally, the bell curve puts 175 at 1 in 3.5 million: about 20 people in the UK and about 2,300 people worldwide. Treat that as an illustration of the model rather than a head count.
Major individually administered adult tests typically report full-scale scores up to about 160. A reported number above that usually comes from extended norms, a different scale or extrapolation.
None of this means nobody is this able. It means a single number is not a reliable way to describe them.
How claims like "175 IQ" arise
Most very high numbers you see online come from one of a few sources, and knowing which one produced a 175 tells you how much weight to put on it.
- Ratio IQ. Early childhood tests divided mental age by real age. A 6-year-old solving puzzles like a typical 10.5-year-old got a ratio IQ of 175. Modern deviation IQs do not work this way.
- Different scales. Some tests use a standard deviation of 24, so a 175 there is about 147 on the usual SD 15 scale.
- Historiometric estimates. Researchers such as Catharine Cox (1926) estimated IQs for famous people from biographies. Some of her adjusted estimates went above 200. They are educated guesses, not test results.
Famous estimates: Newton, da Vinci and the 160+ club
Nobody in history has a measured IQ of 175. The highest estimates on this site, for figures such as Isaac Newton and Leonardo da Vinci, come from reading their work and lives, not from tests. 42 profiles here are estimated at 160 or more.
As far as anyone knows, Albert Einstein never took an IQ test. The 160 figure repeated online is an estimate. See the Einstein profile for what it rests on.
How many people have an IQ of 175 or higher?
On a bell curve with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15, about 0.000029% of people score 175 or higher. Applied to whole populations:
| Where | Population | IQ 175+ |
|---|---|---|
| UK | 68 million | 20 |
| US | 335 million | 96 |
| World | 8.1 billion | 2,300 |
In a city the size of London, about 9 million, you would expect about 3 people to score 175 or higher.
Exactly 175, counting anyone between 174.5 and 175.5, is about 1 in 10 million. In the US that is about 33 people, and in the UK about 7 people.
Treat these as orders of magnitude, not census data. They apply the standard model to everyone, and individual tests have their own norms.
How rare is an IQ of 175?
An IQ of 175 or higher is 5.3 times rarer than 170 or higher, and 180 or higher is 5.9 times rarer again. At this point on the curve, each extra point makes a score about 42% rarer.
What your 175 could really be. Even a good supervised test has a margin of error of roughly 5 points either side, and far more at this height. A true score from 170 to 180 would span rarities from 1 in 653,000 to 1 in 21 million.
Which scale was it on? Score reports do not always say. On the common SD 15 scale your 175 stands as it is. If the report used SD 16 it equals about 170, and if it used SD 24 about 147. The percentile follows the converted number.
Famous people with an estimated IQ near 175
Nobody famous has a verified IQ in most cases, and retrospective estimates are only made for a narrow group.
The estimates on our historical profiles run from 115 to 250, so none lands close to 175. Historians only estimate IQs for people who did something extraordinary, which skews the list. It says nothing about what famous people could actually score.

Percentiles and counts use a normal distribution with mean 100 and standard deviation 15. Real tests have their own norms, confidence intervals and ceilings, so treat every figure here as an approximation, not a diagnosis. Two tests often give different numbers for the same person: here is why.
